Happy Music Monday! Did you notice that it's Pet Week here on our blog and on Sellout.Woot? That's why, today, our mix is all about pets. Today's mix gathers the highs and lows of animal songs and throws them for you to fetch. Go on, readers! Go get it! Go get the mix!

Michael Jackson - Ben

Such a sweet and loving song. It also went to number one and helped start young Michael's solo career as the King Of Pop! And yet, it's about a murderous, possibly telepathic rat. But maybe you can look beyond the strangeness and see the song as a tribute to a loyal and trusted friend. I sure can't. But that's just me, you know?

Good songs, bad songs, you know we've had our share. See you after the jump for the highs and lows of pet songs.

The Presidents Of The United States Of America - Kitty

There's a slight chance that this song isn't meant to be taken literally, but when did The Presidents ever use a metaphor? And anyway, who can resist patting a sweet kitty-cat when it acts all cute and starts meowing? Even when we know we're gonna get scratched, we still go for that fuzzy belly...

Henry Gross - Shannon

On the other end of the spectrum is a contender for the fastest way to clear out a party, the wuss-rock tribute to a Beach Boys pet that "drifted out to sea" and never came back. On the plus side, the song led to the Casey Kasem outake that turned into this NSFW song that might have helped inspire U2 to release this so at least some good came out of it.

David Bowie - Cat People (Putting Out Fire)

Maybe this song is more about the people who love cats, but you can't spell "Cat People" without "Cat" right? Bowie's slick 80s sound works well with the hyper-style of a cat that knows it's running the place. In fact, try singing this to YOUR cat later, see if they meow in harmony.

Porno For Pyros - Pets

The best pets are loyal, obedient, well trained, and perform tricks on command. Sort of like performers we don't have to pay! Except Perry Ferrel isn't as snuggly on a cold night. Probably you still have to walk him, though.

If you need to get petted, hit up the team in our Turntable.fm room and wag your tail to the regular Music Monday enjoyment. Pet Week rolls on all week long! Also, let us just remind you: some images come from the corresponding Wikipedia page and are here under fair use.

I'm assuming no one else is participating because "My Pal Foot Foot" is the definitive pet song.

Paul McCartney & Wings - "Jet"

Folks have said this song is about McCartney's same named Labrador Retriever.

If you can find a Wombles song about pets, feel free to post it. Trust me, I tried to think of one. Or were you waiting for Mike Batt to write one?

Also: I'm pretty sure that parrot was actually biting fingers with his horny beak, and Vivian Stanshall enjoyed seeing it.

Isn't "Martha, My Dear" also about a dog of his? Is every McCartney song about a pet?

Sparklehorse and Tom Waits got together on a song called Dog Door. I don't know if it strictly fits the theme, but it sure does have a disturbing video. I can't even tell if it's NSFW or not.

They Might Be Giants had a song called Dog Walker on their album Join Us.

Ok, here's one that's actually about a dog. Joanna Newsom's song Sadie is mostly about her Labrador Sadie. It's a beautiful song.

Yes, "Martha, My Dear" is about Paul's English Sheep Dog. The same dog that's pictured on his first solo album.

Here's the song. Video has pics of Martha.

Obligatory "Who Let the Dogs Out" Baha Men ref.
(Secondary "But they covered somebody else's song" comment)

A Horse with No Name - America

um...

"How much is that Puppy in the Window?"

hrm...

"The Cat Came Back" - It's one of those pets you just can't get rid of

"Jennyanny Dots" and "Mister Mistoffoles" seem to be the only two "owned" cats in the musical "Cats", which is kind of stretching it, depending on how the lyrics are read. There's also "Skimbleshanks: The Railway Cat" and "Gus: The Theatre Cat", which are both examples of pets "adopted by a group, whether they want it or not".

Can't beat 70's folk music:

"Me and You, and dog named Boo", from Lobo

"Wildfire", by Michael Martin Murphy

And, back to the 60s.

"I Love My Dog" by Cat Stevens

Perhaps we should include Smelly Cat

...even though it may have also qualified a few weeks back when the theme was Fake Rock Bands.

Technically the Beach Boys album 'Pet Sounds' qualifies. Auntie Beeb analyzed the heck out of it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ITsxbE5jf4
