Does this device stream movies off of local shared devices like Windows? I have a boxee right now and looking for something that kids can do similar to what it does on their TV.

I don't know how Boxee works, but with Roku you'll have to set up a Plex media server on your local computer and download the Plex channel on your Roku. Through MyPlex you can also bookmark videos on the web and play them through the Roku, but that gets a little buggy.
