why does the description say zipper side and the illustration show laces?
Inquiring minds want to know.

does it have both or just look like it has laces and is a big boy boot?

Great looking, and need some good boots... so I was excited but I see no mention of being WATERPROOF

This + Vibram + Gore-tex would be perfect. Pass.

EDIT: After further review of Bates' boots, they have a Vibram+Gore-tex model, for $220. If only it was at this price...

Sadly, neither steel-toed or steal-towed, it seems

They're black, therefore they're tactical. Water resistance is futile.

Surely no master would wear Bate's boots.

These boots are great. We use these at work and they are quite comfortable for a full shift.

The zipper on the side makes is MUCH easier to get these on, and then you also have traditional laces to get them as loose or tight as you like.

I would buy a pair, but work provides them...

I really, really don't need another pair of boots, but I have to give them props for actually having small sizes. I'm a size 7 in women's, and more often than not, I find men's boots I like that are never small enough to fit me (5-5.5).

Every time I see "tactical" style boots I think of the militarization of our "peace officers"(sic) and the coming police state. Correction, we are already there.....

would it work to spray these with one of those water repellent aerosols?

A lot of military wear these. I wore them the last last 8 years I was in the military and still did years later. They're great for hiking, look good in jeans and are comfortable. The zipper provides easy on/off and if they get wet dry out pretty quick. This particular model may not be waterproof but you can buy a spray to do that which works rather effectively. I'd easily buy another pair at this price if I still had a need for them.

Same here. Yay for small sizes! Boo for already owning black workboots. If these were either waterproof or safety toes, I'd strongly consider it, though.

Is the boot waterproof? I would use this for the Snow shoveling. I have Gout and super wide feet. Using my regular Boots Lace up kills my feet.

Hope it is.

I too would be all over that deal... however as it is, I just don't need another regular old boot. They look spiffy though.

I've had a couple of pairs of these boots (just bought 3 more on this Woot) and won't go back to the standard lace boots anymore. You lace them up like you would with any boot, but when you want to take them off, just unzip them. To put them back on, you just zip them up and they fit as well as if you spent the time lacing them. So much easier.

Advertise "Zero Mass", and then no spec showing an average weight?

Whas up wit dat? What is an average weight, to compare to my existing boots?

I wonder how well they'd work for motorcycle boots.

I've worn boots like this and they are terrific, especially if you want comfort and support. I lace up the boots first, fairly tight, and then zip up the sides. That many laces can be a pain to constantly loosen and tighten. My method can get the boots very tight, which you want when support is primary.

I worked a career for the Post Office and came to love Neos overboots! Lightweight, waterproof; put 'em on over comfortable shoes. Now that I'm retired, I can shovel snow wearing Crocs or even slippers. Got by fine with the basic model; didn't need the insulated or tall ones. Here's an Amazon link.

The average weight of the Bates Zero Mass 8" is 1 pound/per. Comparatively speaking, the average running shoe is .5 pounds and the average hiker shoe is 1.5 pounds.

The other boot place (edit: if you wear combat boots, you should know) has $300 batesesses for $40, but they're no goretex, no waterproof. I'll wait for a sale on w/p 5.11s.
