It may only be 512MB, but it's expandable, it's unique, and it's Alienware (so it's gotta be good). If I had a job, I'd snatch one up for sure. Good woot.
Oh, hey! Here's an idea. Sell some more of these during the next wootoff, which should be coming up ANY DAY NOW!!! :oD

FROM ANOTHER WEBSITE --- DO NOT FLAME THE MESSENGER
Perhaps I should start with a rebuttal to the bad reviews I've read. The player is very lightweight. This doesn't necessarily mean cheap. What do you expect? It's made of plastic with a few small integrated circuits. The supposed metal band is actually chrome plated plastic. It is not advertised as made of metal so why complain. It doesn't have a built-in rechargeable battery. Good, when the single AAA cell runs down I can chuck it and put another in. At four for a buck that's better than waiting three to five hours for a non-replaceable battery to charge. If you want a rechargeable battery then go buy one for a couple of bucks and buy the optional charger. You have to remove the battery cover to access the SD card slot. Good, it keeps the dirt out of the slot. The instructions say it can only use a 512 MB SD card but my 1GB card works fine. The earphones stay in my ears just fine. That said, here's my review. I'll focus on what was important to me. You can read about some other features in other reviews.
The good:
1. Lightweight.
2. Replaceable AAA battery or optional rechargeable battery and charger.
3. Excellent sound (no funny background noise like some other players.
4. Excellent noise blocking earphones.
5. SD card expansion slot good for at least 1 GB.
The Bad:
1. The display is virtually unreadable when the backlight is off. You should have the option of changing the white on black display to black on white. It would be readable without the backlight then.
2. No folder management in the menus. You have to step through every track to find the one you want (except you can switch from internal memory to the SD card as a shortcut). Careful use of file names and ID3 tags helps to find things.
3. No case. I got an adequate very inexpensive case made by Case Logic.
4. Eats batteries like a demon. When I use it regularly I can easily go through two batteries a day. Well, that's fifty cents a day under heavy use. I may think about getting the charger and some rechargable batteries but alkaline batteries are cheap and convenient.
Overall it's an excellent player.

Smart. Except. Not at all.
Alienware was making these players before the Dell acquisition.
It is Alienware technology, and not Dell. Read the reviews - And now that Dell owns Alienware, they have probably adopted the same policy to not fight in the IPod arena...in any case, it is an excellent deal, especially with the docking station/boom box which is purported to work with other USB-type players.

I return you now to the inevitable "too bad I have an iPod" comments.
I have an original b&w U2 iPod. but I never take it anywhere, because I'm afraid I will drop or scratch it, if it sits on my belt. My iPod also can't record audio. I bought some RCA MP3 players last month from Woot which were cool, to give as gifts, etc. I may yet buy this, simply because when I'm at home I can plug any of my players into the base, and I'll have yet another player for the road. I find Alienware a little tacky usually in design, and often overpriced for the engineering, but this price point seems to work
Best thing about cheap players is that you can drop them and not cry over losing $300. Flash players usually work after you drop them, anyway. And even if they break, hey, they're cheap(er).
p.s. Early this week I bought a 2GB SD card for $33 (if the rebate comes). It will go in all my flash players. I'll bet this thing takes 2GB cards also. It won't go in my iPod.
p.p.s. my iPod not only won't record audio, it doesn't have an FM radio. This one does, as do the RCAs I bought earlier. I'll bet this one will even record from the radio, like the RCAs do.

Here's what I'm thinking: If you want either of these items, buy the package and ebay-sell the one you don't want. You should be able to get a good $40 out of either, at least. Then you've gotten the thing you want for about $40 or less.
But then I saw the thing about no folder management. Holy mackerel, that's retarded. No way am I going thru, track by track, till i find the song song I want. Good gravy.
I suppose if you'd like a nice boombox for your existing player, you could buy this woot and unload the player on some poor sap, but if you're here on woot there's a good chance you've got a set of computer speakers you can plug your riverpodzen into for in-house enjoyment.
-BUT- the only alienware mp3s I'm seeing on ebay right now (wait a week, ;) ) are a 1-gigger with 1 bid on it already for $80(!) and a 512er at an "ebay store" with a buy-it-now of $99. So you could get some serious bread out of this. Who knows.
well, thanks for your time

Looks pretty good. I am not sure of the 512mb, though.

Someone brought up the question as to whether this model would really support 1GB or higher cards. Great question. Unfortunately, this device doesn't appear on the alienware.com website anywhere that I could find, not even in the support section, so I can't see the official limit. That worries me. The RCAs can handle a lot more than their official limit, and I'm guessing these probably can, too. But it bugs me that Alienware has seemingly orphaned this product.
