Your also in a totally different market, they do NOT make 10GB flash drive MP3 players, (only hard drive players which do NOT compete with these).

^^^ hub 100$

However, about a month ago there was a 256mb player from RCA with the rest of the specs exact the same as this one...but 1/3rd the size and about 55$ cheaper...after you buy a 2gb or a 4gb SD card to go in it, that 256mb difference is pretty small....

as someone else pointed out, this is probably just a rebranded dell MP3 player...since dell owns AW now...so, you are paying a lot for the AW name....heck the official AW site doesnt even list this item...

and of course you can connect your 25$ RCA player to any stereo or computer with a 10$ cable...

It may only be 512MB, but it's expandable, it's unique, and it's Alienware (so it's gotta be good). If I had a job, I'd snatch one up for sure. Good woot.

Oh, hey! Here's an idea. Sell some more of these during the next wootoff, which should be coming up ANY DAY NOW!!! :oD

Not to mention that you can plug your other mp3 players into this speakers as well.

FROM ANOTHER WEBSITE --- DO NOT FLAME THE MESSENGER

Perhaps I should start with a rebuttal to the bad reviews I've read. The player is very lightweight. This doesn't necessarily mean cheap. What do you expect? It's made of plastic with a few small integrated circuits. The supposed metal band is actually chrome plated plastic. It is not advertised as made of metal so why complain. It doesn't have a built-in rechargeable battery. Good, when the single AAA cell runs down I can chuck it and put another in. At four for a buck that's better than waiting three to five hours for a non-replaceable battery to charge. If you want a rechargeable battery then go buy one for a couple of bucks and buy the optional charger. You have to remove the battery cover to access the SD card slot. Good, it keeps the dirt out of the slot. The instructions say it can only use a 512 MB SD card but my 1GB card works fine. The earphones stay in my ears just fine. That said, here's my review. I'll focus on what was important to me. You can read about some other features in other reviews.

The good:

1. Lightweight.
2. Replaceable AAA battery or optional rechargeable battery and charger.
3. Excellent sound (no funny background noise like some other players.
4. Excellent noise blocking earphones.
5. SD card expansion slot good for at least 1 GB.

The Bad:

1. The display is virtually unreadable when the backlight is off. You should have the option of changing the white on black display to black on white. It would be readable without the backlight then.
2. No folder management in the menus. You have to step through every track to find the one you want (except you can switch from internal memory to the SD card as a shortcut). Careful use of file names and ID3 tags helps to find things.
3. No case. I got an adequate very inexpensive case made by Case Logic.
4. Eats batteries like a demon. When I use it regularly I can easily go through two batteries a day. Well, that's fifty cents a day under heavy use. I may think about getting the charger and some rechargable batteries but alkaline batteries are cheap and convenient.

Overall it's an excellent player.

The epinions link above states that the 1GB version can use up to a 1GB expansion SD, and the 512MB player can use up to a 512MB card for expansion. Can anyone else find information on the maximum memory after expansion?

Also, when you use an expansion card, "the unit doesn't combine the storage into one directory. You have to switch back and forth in the menu depending if you want to use 'internal' or 'expanded' storage."

It is Alienware technology, and not Dell. I return you now to the inevitable "too bad I have an iPod" comments.

I have an original b&w U2 iPod. but I never take it anywhere, because I'm afraid I will drop or scratch it, if it sits on my belt. My iPod also can't record audio. I bought some RCA MP3 players last month from Woot which were cool, to give as gifts, etc. I may yet buy this, simply because when I'm at home I can plug any of my players into the base, and I'll have yet another player for the road. I find Alienware a little tacky usually in design, and often overpriced for the engineering, but this price point seems to work

Best thing about cheap players is that you can drop them and not cry over losing $300. Flash players usually work after you drop them, anyway. And even if they break, hey, they're cheap(er).

p.s. Early this week I bought a 2GB SD card for $33 (if the rebate comes). It will go in all my flash players. I'll bet this thing takes 2GB cards also. It won't go in my iPod.
p.p.s. my iPod not only won't record audio, it doesn't have an FM radio. This one does, as do the RCAs I bought earlier. I'll bet this one will even record from the radio, like the RCAs do.

i got the iRiver 20gb blue (refurb (rox0rz!) r0x0rz) for not even twice that price. filled it up and i'm listening to it now on my noise-cancelling earbuds. (wouldn't use the boombox att'd since it's too big to carry around and other people don't like how loud my music is

edit: this iRiver has radio/recording (even FM recording)/text/picture support. meh.

I don't have an Ipod, but you've got to be the only person on the planet who thinks this is nice looking, and would take it over an Ipod. It's got no folder management, and a hideous looking bug eyed grey on its face.

Note that it's one AAA battery (not included)
for the player, and uses 8 D batteries (not included)
for the boombox, it you're not using the AC Adapter.

Here's what I'm thinking: If you want either of these items, buy the package and ebay-sell the one you don't want. You should be able to get a good $40 out of either, at least. Then you've gotten the thing you want for about $40 or less.

But then I saw the thing about no folder management. Holy mackerel, that's retarded. No way am I going thru, track by track, till i find the song song I want. Good gravy.

I suppose if you'd like a nice boombox for your existing player, you could buy this woot and unload the player on some poor sap, but if you're here on woot there's a good chance you've got a set of computer speakers you can plug your riverpodzen into for in-house enjoyment.

-BUT- the only alienware mp3s I'm seeing on ebay right now (wait a week, ;) ) are a 1-gigger with 1 bid on it already for $80(!) and a 512er at an "ebay store" with a buy-it-now of $99. So you could get some serious bread out of this. Who knows.

    well, thanks for your time

    Hey, everyone just joined.

Site is nice... I have been a "slickdeals" guy for years.

I was temped with this player. I like the fact that it is upgradable andthat it takes a regular old battery. Some people still like that. 512mb with a upgrade of 1gb or so would be fine with me. I am not a college student and do not spend enormous ammounts of time alone. I would have no use for a fancy 20 or 30 gb player. I have a ton of music, but no need to carry it all with me..

I have a Rio Cali 128mb with a gig upgrade and love it. If I drop it while cutting the grass or drop it while biking or if I happen to dive in the lake with it on... it's not a big deal. Pull the rechargable batt and the sd card and get another unit for 20 bucks.

Oh well. Nice to be here and I will be watching for deals to come.

For the office, it's a bargain...

Most boombox CD players/radios for the desktop sell for $50-75--I'd gladly pay $80 for songs I've preselected, doing away with CD's (and still have the option for radio).

Someone brought up the question as to whether this model would really support 1GB or higher cards. Great question. Unfortunately, this device doesn't appear on the alienware.com website anywhere that I could find, not even in the support section, so I can't see the official limit. That worries me. The RCAs can handle a lot more than their official limit, and I'm guessing these probably can, too. But it bugs me that Alienware has seemingly orphaned this product.

    Can't you get a 1gb nano for about $100 on a deal?

    MrGuy

quality posts: 0 Private Messages MrGuy

For the nay sayers, Alienware has a history of quality hardware, second this isn't meant to be a library archive--it's a convenient player, with convenient features not available in a majority of portable audio file players, namely it doesn't require proprietary software (what a concept!), is seen as a storage device, and allows you continious power (swapable cells).
This is only the half of it. Not only are you getting a convenient so so priced player, your getting a 30 watt (2x15) boombox with subwoofer and massive equalization. I don't know about you but my Sony CD player boombox without a 3.5 minijack connectors has the same specs and cost me $250 new.

Very good Woot! I'm in again. I quit counting my Woot purchases after the 20th item.

The Nano does not support expandable memory and who really cares how much you can accessorize the thing.
