I have a 7600GT. Is this better or worse. It might have a bigger number but it's GS and it's a lot cheaper. No idea about video cards but it seems like a good deal if it's better than the one I have.

This card has dual DVI connectors and TV-OUT jack but does not ship with DVI to VGA converters or video cables.

This is important to keep in mind.

also, it could be a woot launch for this brand of card (??)

Different GPUs of the same series can NOT SLI - if not for technological reasons than because NVidia won't let you (they can get more money out of you by making you get another 7900GT).

Hehe. If these things have the power of the mobile chipsets, they will rock in the towers. Cheaper card than the 7900 GTX, but delivers a decent performance that can pritty much kill any game. Just bought a lappy though, nite woot.

Crap, the earliest I'll be going to PCI-E for a mobo is next may. By then these won't be much more expensive retail.

Still a good woot. 7900Gts go for 250-300 on newegg, not exactly sure where the GS falls into line though.

Should note this is what Dell currently has in their 2nd and 2rd best XPS systems, so it can't be all that bad (well, we all know it is amazing, but no GT).

For the price, I don't think you can beat a dual 7900GS for $285!!!!! Now I wish I had the cash for the rest of the computer!

Nvidia Plans to Sell GeForce 7900 GS in Retail.
Nvidia Readies GeForce 7900 GS for $199

Category: Video

by Anton Shilov

[ 08/12/2006 | 01:05 PM ]

Nvidia Corp., one of the world’s leading suppliers of graphics processing units (GPUs), reportedly plans to release its GeForce 7900 GS graphics card in the retail market after offering the model through system builders for several years now. A report suggests that the GeForce 7900 GS offer pretty high speed amid very low price points.

According to a news-story by HKEPC, the GeForce 7900 GS will emerge in late August while being priced in the range between $179 and $199. The part is mainly needed by Nvidia to compete with ATI’s Radeon X1650-product series known under RV560 code-name. Earlier only large system integrators, such as Dell, sold GeForce 7900 GS graphics cards.

The GeForce 7900 GS has 20 pixel processors, 7 vertex processors and 256-bit memory bus. The GeForce 7900 GS is powered by the latest graphics chip code-named G71, thus, comes with dual-link DVI outputs and other advantages the G71 has over predecessors, particularly, very low power consumption. Earlier it was reported that the model 7900 GS has GPU clocked at 470MHz and memory operating at 1320MHz.

By launching the GeForce 7900 GS ahead of ATI Radeon X1650-series products launch Nvidia puts serious pressure on its rival, particularly, on the Radeon X1800 GTO, which will have to be sold for the price below $179, something, which may not be easy for ATI Technologies, who was planning to increase its gross margins this quarter.

Nvidia did not comment on the news-story.

The 7900GS is a 20-pixel pipeline version of the 7900GT (a 24-pixel pipeline card).

http://tech.china.com/zh_cn/hardware/diy/mydiy/873/20060814/images/13539073_2006081414232970547200.jpg

7600GT cards are 12-pixel pipeline cards, so this is quite an upgrade over them. I don't even need a video card and I'm considering wooting this.

In response to the BIOS flashing idea, I'm pretty sure the success rate is zero. They made a point of making the lock be at a very low level of the hardware, not a simple BIOS setting.

Generally, GT is faster than GS. GS is the budget version for Nvidia GPUs if I'm not mistaken. 7900 GS is the lower clocked G71 chip. The 7900s are the latest line of nvidia i think, replacing the 7800.

Ok same card different manufacturer for 112 on NEWEGG.COM. There is another card exact same but has a vga in place of one of the dvi for 105. So the only up to this card is it is a more familiar maufacturer. I dont know if that makes a difference. Hope I helped.

If any of you would read http://www.hkepc.com/bbs/itnews.php?tid=648668 << that link you would see that the reason somebody was selling one on ebay is that the card up until this point was an OEM only unit, meaning you could only get it with a Dell etc. This is the first time the card is being offered by itself before it hits the retail market. Given the target launch price is between 179 and 199, this is a good woot. Sure you're one pixel shader down but you are getting all the nifty new features of the NVIDIA 7 series without dishing out major cash.. I paid 130 for a 6800 extreme recently and this card is faster then that so this is a good deal. BUT its only a good deal if you understand its OEM and you know how to download and install drivers and dont need tech support. If you are a Tech noob, move along.

Here's a description of the 7900GS chipset at techPowerUp!:
http://www.techpowerup.com/?15572

Apparently the 7900GS has been available from OEM's, integrated into systems, but not as separate cards to consumers... so therefore the launch woot is sort of valid.

this card isn't out yet, it isn't as good as the 7900gt. i think people that said they have this card didn't read correctly. its expected to sell between $179 and $199. this is a good price, even cheaper than the 7600gt which i think this card trumps. i think this card has 20 pipes, so not as many as the 7900gt. here is a link to supposed leaked 3dmark scores http://www.vr-zone.com/?i=3903
