Curse you Woot! I love nVidia, but I can't buy this...I have sworn off video games until I graduate in June. Then I will replace my legacy 6600GT PCI-e (he-he)...could you remember to get some more cards in 9 months? I will be just about ready then.
Thanks!!!

Hey...anyone..desperately want to Woot but need to know what kind of power this thing sucks down.

I only have a crapy Dell Factory PSU that is 305watts. How much more will I need to run the 7900GS

Well I picked one up, with this good deal I figured it was time to upgrade from my 6800... only downside is no parts just the card... just gonna have to figure that out I guess. Thanks WOOT

I do know mine is pretty old and could possibly use an upgrade. My 2.53GHz Pentium4 Gateway is running an NVIDIA GeForce Ti 4200 graphics card...I do know that this 7900GS card looks like it'd fit in the same slot as my current card, but,

Based on this information, would the 7900GS work with my current computer? Thank you!

Unfortunately, it won't. The Ti4200 is an AGP card, whereas this one is a PCI-E card, which is incompatible. If you want to upgrade your card, I think there's an AGP version of the 7800 somewhere out there.

I have to do it....
I need to get out of this 6800.
I'm gonna bag one of these bad boys.

For everyone out there the fan on this beast looks way less than adequate. If you get one look into a new fan or if you have a lot of money to spend... for the sake of humanity buy liquid.(if you do sli with this and you don't have liquid don't blame nVidia for burning down your house)
And as someone in the market for a video card for the past few months, based on prices for video cards a little better than this, i think the price will be from $199.99-$249.99.

Too bad i won't be getting a box with a sexy picture.... ugh OEM

P.S. A DVI to VGA adapter is cheap. 3.49 here

I'm seriously considering buying this video card.
But, where can I purchase the power cable at?
Can someone post a link to the item, preferably at newegg.
And I might need the DVI > VGA converter.

something that should be noted is this card i believe also requires a 6 pin pci e power connector. so make sure your power supply has that connector on it as well.

It's an oddity, but yeah, they exist. Lots of weird mobos if you look for them - Jetway makes one that has both S754 and S939, but can only use one at a time (obviously).

I looked as well, and there don't appear to currently be any 7900GSs available on Newegg. The other models of 7900 are there, but not the GS.

On a different topic: Damn you Woot! My first real Woot purchase and you're already making me RMA return the X850XT I bought off of Newegg so I can get this instead! Damn you (in the kindest way possible)!

Yay impulsiveness. I'm in. The Nvidia site mentions that the 7900 series supports an HDTV encoder w/ possible component (not just composite) output. The card only looks like it has an svideo tv-out. Is there some sort of dongle for the DVI slot?? Does the GS even support that? No real info on the nvidia site, unfortunately.

Absolutely not. Your card is AGP, this is PCI-E. Not compatible at all. sorry.

So, I am thinkin about getting it because I am building my own system here soon, but is PCI-E 16 much better then the good ol' AGP? Are they faster, or pretty much the same thing?

Right, though there are easily available adapters that convert two four-pin Molex connectors (like on harddrives and CD drives) into one six-pin PCI-E. Worth it if you can spare the connectors and are too cheap to get a new PSU.

Nope, the 4200 is an AGP card, you need a motherboard with a "PCI EXPRESS" slot(s)
There are Socket 478 (your Pentium I believe) motherboards, but with different chipset you'd probably be reinstalling the operating system...and Gateway OEM Windows disks are "married" to the motherboard and/or chipset, and using an OEM or full Windows disk is unlikely to work with your serial number.

Good combo deals exist on the web for Motherboards and Barebones systems. Its LOTS easier than it seems, building your own or upgrading even not knowing anything! All I use is a 3.2GHz and nVidia 7950 and I have unbelieveable benchmark numbers, so even a cheap motherboard upgrade would be well worth it for you!

(Just remember "DDR2" RAM boards cant use DDR, it wont even fit)

Never wooting again. I've learned my lesson about inferior customer service and employees that illegally modify your signature (18 U.S.C. § 1029). Grow up, woot. (Edit of Mod edit: I am telling the truth about you modifying my signature to slander me. I am not attacking people. You dont qualify as "people" until you call me back and I hear a voice on the phone, then we can discuss how your employees are harassing me.) Still no response Since December 2010.

I just paid about $300 for a 7900gt in 256. Funny thing is, not a lot of Intel boards are accepting dual cards right now. Not in 950 chipsets. I may just get 2 and wait cuz Im told Intel is aligning themselves with Nvidia again and the new chipset boards in dual-sli will be here in September. It's a great deal even if you go with just one card. It's killer if you have a board able to handle 2

Beleaf4 wrote:I too have a (new) 7600GT which I got for $150.00 ...

From looking at benchmarks comparing the 7600gt & 7900gt and reducing the 7900gt's scores a bit to make up for the locked pipes, I'd say the GS should be around 30%-40% faster depending on the game.

ChrisJericho

quality posts: 0 Private Messages ChrisJericho

I think this might be a good deal, but I am hesitent to buy due to the lack of benchmarks.

However, I think this may resembe the 7800gt in terms of performance because both models have 20 pipes and 256 megs of ram, though this new 7900gs has higher core and memory clocks.

Though the card may debut in retail stores between $199- 179 I think prices will come down since you can find 7900gt's in many places for around $230 after rebates and prices are still dropping.

This card is available through Dell with new desktops and laptops (GeForce Go). Its been listed on one of the sites listed in this thread to only use 20W compared to the 7900GTX which uses 42W.

I bought one for my Dell (E510) since the ATI x600 card I have was the best available at the time. Thanks Woot!

Quite right. People will probably need the power connector, and unless they have a DVI monitor (probably LCD) they're going to need a DVI to VGA adaptor as not all LCD displays come with DVI connectors. For anybody else considering this purchase:

No, it won't work with AGP
No, it won't work with PCI
If your card/board is more than 1.5 years old, chances are it's AGP and your board wouldn't support a PCI-E card anyway.
You will probably need some extra accessories to get it to work properly with your system.

They're pretty much the same, but the Card manufactures have pretty much given up on making new AGP cards. If your building a new system it doesn't make sense to get an AGP card anymore as you would be limiting your current choices & leaving yourself no upgrade path.

This card is the highest quality graphics card offered in Dell machines (XPS700) the update from a more standard 128MB PCI Express™ x16 (DVI/VGA/TV-out) ATI Radeon X300 SE HyperMemory to the 256MB nVidia GeForce 7900 GS tacks $200 on the price tag. So take the price of a X300, add 200 and you've got your price, and if you don't wana do all that, know that it's worth at least more than $200 and it's sold in high end dell systems. And by the way this is dell's price for dual cards: Dual 256MB nVidia GeForce 7900 GS [add $500 or $15/month1] so you're looking at about $250.
