Warning! Long story below -- somewhat charming and reassuring to those who may have purchased this woot with any degree of relucance, however.

I took an oath to myself several months ago that I would abstain from large computer-related purchases for the forseeable future as my computer was (and still is) VERY good, and I'd spent excessive time researching the right components to put in it, buying and selling new parts for old parts, etc...

... And all of that comes to a screeching halt as of today. I bought Battlefield 2 Deluxe Edition, which includes Special Forces, recently and with great reluctance. Trying to play the game on my 20.1" widescreen Dell UltraSharp 2005FPW proved to be unfulfilling, however. The game actually froze my system at one point because of excessive strain on my eVGA GeForce 6600GT PCI-e video card. (I benchmark and stress test extensively, so I know the video card was at fault.) When I restarted my computer from that very crash and opened the woot.com website from my Firefox bookmarks, staring me in the face was the bright and shining hope for my gaming future, and the doom of my oath to computer stasis.

This is nearing my tenth woot and I am sure it will prove to be as sound of a purchase as the last ones.

Yeah, I wish they'd do that too... put out computer components to make a computer over the course of a week. Of course there'd be problems with newegg filing against them claiming they were breaking their monopoly on OEM components

"According to sources from the graphic market, NVIDIA plans to put Geforce 7900GS into retail market in late August. This is direct answer to ATIs Radeon X1650XT which is to be released in October. Geforce 7900GS is originally a special version for the OEM market, where it has been used in mainstream to high-end branded PC like Dell, HP and Lenovo. It uses the G71 core which is the same as the one in 7900GT, but the GS version has 1 less Pixel and Vertex Shader Unit which is equal to 20 pixel pipes and 7 vertex shaders, like 7800GS. The 7900GS core speed is 450MHz, together with 256MB memory clocked at 1.32GHz. Again, Geforce 7900GS has to hit the market in late August with price between $179 and $199. In addition to this news, the retail price of Geforce 7600GT has been reduced to $130 and new product probably called Geforce 7950GT is to be released soon." Um, they did it to the G70. Of that I am sure. Anyway, it's not reengineering. They created a piece of tech ('laser lock' is bouncing around in my head') that gives them the ability to sell cards for less while not giving people the full potential of the hardware. It makes perfect sense.

Now, why bother mentioning an instant-win in an argument like this if you're not going to link to it?

Looks like they also make a 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 7600GS that comes inside the FUSE X200 systems.

Well, I've given this some thought.

Windows Vista will run on it most likely, but the newest games out are going to need to be DirectX 10 compatible.

This is definitely a deal, but might become outdated VERY fast at this stage in the game.

I guess I will wait until all of the new tech out settles down a bit.

Will this work with a AGP accelerator slot combined with a PCI-E pin converter and power from CPU fan connectors #2?

It's going to be a minimum of two years before any game -requires- DX10 features that are not currently available in hardware. Publishing companies make their money off the mass market, and not every joe blow has the money to throw at always having the most cutting edge hardware.

My computer hates NVidia stuff, at least an nVidia Video card adn nVidia Sound, it kept freezing on games and stuff when I had a combo like that, I'll stick with my Raedeon 9800 Pro thanks...

Not to mention if I can't find reviews or other prices on this I'm seriously skipping it. No idea how well it works by just the specs, any number of things could go awry.

The 7900GS has the exact same clocks (450MHz core and 1320MHz memory) as the stock reference 7900GT. The difference is the GS has fewer pipelines. The 7900GT has 24 Texture Units and 8 Vertex Pipelines. The GS has only 20 and 7, respectively. Don't think you can restore them either. nVidia laser cuts the die so the pipelines cannot be unlocked. On the good side, the G71 is a monster overclocker. This card should be able to do 550MHz and 1500MHz easily.

This card WILL beat an 7600GT. Those are clocked slightly faster at 560/1400 but are limited by 12 Texture Units and 5 Vertex Pipelines. They do not overclock as well as the G71 either.

I can't find anything at [H] or at xtremesystems about being able to unlock this card with Rivatuner. I would guess that you won't be able to. Nvidia laser locked the 7800's after the whole 6800 pipes mishap. Riva was never able to unlock those, and I can't see why Nvidia would get lazy and make it possible for you to easily unlock their cards again.

RivaTuner can't unlock because the pathways on the die are no longer there. They are not laser locked.... they are laser CUT.

Ha, this is perfect for me !!! On the 2nd of August, I bought an overpriced Radeon X1300 pci express video card from CompUSA, paid US$137.79 for it. This is a muuuuuch better card for nearly the same price. What kicks ass is that I have 21 days to return my purchase to CompUSA, and since today makes it exactly 21 days since then, I am happy. There could be no better timing, so thanks Woot =)~ What that means, however, is that I hafta keep my fingers crossed that this card arrives fast, so that I won't go too long without a graphics card on my desktop.

swartz23 wrote:i have a pci card now, is pci-e compatable or no?

no, pci-e and pci are not the same thing. standard pci has been around for a long time now, and it is meant mainly for add-on cards such as a modem or nic. pci-express is a newer standard, meant for graphics cards and in the future, other add-on cards as well. pci-express has been availible for about 2 years now i believe. it's the new mainstream for video cards, and what appears to be the last generation of agp graphics cards have been released. if you don't own a motherboard that has pci-express, you should buy one, and buy one capable of sli. this card is a very good price from what i've seen lately, so if you're looking to upgrade, buy a new motherboard that can handle this card, and the card as well. that's my advice to anyone running an outdated graphics card.

Yeah, I'd say that the step up to this card from a Radeon 9800 is a necessity for a gamer. It is pretty outdated at this point.

You actually need a two 4-pin to 6-pin adapter. Those are easy to find:
www.directron.com/6pinpcie.html

Also make sure your PSU is up to par. You need AT MINIMUM a 400w power supply with 25-30A on the 12v line(s). This card probably uses 50-60w of power (4-5A).

I think you might want to do it... Good price on a nice card. Clock speeds are a bit slower, but I'm sure these will OC okay. Even if you don't over clock the video card, it will still be a lot better than your 6600LE.
