Now that the whole world's gone wacko for wide-screen (to the point that we can sell nothing today but a InFocus 76-inch 16:9 Projector Screen and still pay our bills), we're left wondering what we've been missing all this time. We're not just talking about old 4:3 TV shows and "Academy standard" movies - we want to know what was going on just out of frame in classic works of art like The Garden of Earthly Delights and Nude Descending A Staircase. Sadly, the great artists of the ages are no longer here to supplement their original pieces with bonus material. But hey, you're here, and that'll have to do. Your challenge this week:

Take a famous painting, drawing, or photograph and make it "wide-screen" by adding more imagery to the left and right of the original work.

Your entry can take the any form, despite the copy-paste error earlier to suggesting it depict a TV show. Post your entry here by 11:59 PM CDT on Sunday, September 24, 2006. Prizes are $20/$50/$100 for 3rd/2nd/1st. The rules and criteria for winning: our panel of geniuses can and will make stuff up as it goes along. Use Photoshop, pen and ink, collage, MSPaint, scrimshaw carving, tattoos, ice sculpture, whatever, but it’ll only be judged if it’s visible in our forums as a jpg, gif, or png. Try to keep your maximum width to 450px. If you need a place to host your pictures, try www.imageshack.ws or www.photobucket.com. We have no connection to either, but they seem free and easy to use. And if you want us to be sure your entry was indeed your work, post links to your source images. The more sure we are that you did your own work, the more likely we are to consider it for a prize.

Past money winners: If you'd like to nominate any entries from this week's contest, email your selections (with links to the individual post) to Jason at jtoon@woot.com by noon CDT on Monday.

"Your entry can take the form of a screen grab, a publicity still, a DVD cover, whatever, as long as it depicts a television show. "

I think some one got lazy and copied and pasted lastweeks rules without changing them. Shame on you Toon.

So is the 450px rule waived due to the nature of the contest theme?

And what he didn't want you to see...

some may argue that i didn't add anything to the left side... but those people would just not be able to see the 1 column of pixels i added to the whole left side :-) just to keep within the rules... of course.. i can't figure out how to make the image show up smaller than 600 wide.. so maybe i'll be thrown right out of the contest anyway.

Finally! Four years of art history at Iowa State pay off. If I get first, second, AND third I'll only need to cover the other nineteen thousand, eight hundred, and thirty dollars in some other contest! Woo hoo!

Sometimes old people just need a change. I wondered what that smell was.
