This is supposed to save you from having to change stations incessently, but I got an IPod car adapter recently, and had a hard time finding a suitable "empty" frequency, and then it kept changing! So..... I had to change stations incessently! Plus, then, reset the adapter to the new station. Impossible while driving! Was there something I was doing wrong? Is there a secret frequency that's always blank? What's the deal?

I have this radio. It's excellent. I also have the home dock. It jusy pops off of the car dock and you can bring it inside and plug it right on the home dock with no wires to mess with and have the same music in the house. XM is for the music lover. All sirius has is NFL.

I paid $49 for this at Best Buy back in May. The gave me the car charger and 3 months via rebate. This does not seem like a great deal. I do like the receiver though and love xm. They have great music, baseball and I got it for the soccer. They are coming out with new model so check out the deals before yoou buy.

Look at the rebate form. Purchases from WalMart, Sams, BJs, Costco and Staples are NOT ELIGIBLE for the rebate. + I've never had any problem with shipping or woot standing behind defects.

FYI: I received my $30 rebate for the Canon PIXMA photo printer about 10 days ago with no problems at all. They accepted the woot! order confirmation page as my receipt. It should be noted however, that this is a different manufacturer and MAY have different rules, but I wouldn't let this stand in the way if I really wanted one. Woot hasn't let me down yet, even when I had a defective item sent to me.

$40 w/ car adapter is a good deal.

"Dah, this is a great deal Robin. Tell 'em Fred! I wish I could have gone to XM, you know, I invented Satellite Radio. " -- Hoo Hoo Howie from the Howie Copter enroute to the Hamptons.

XM has a lot going for it. I have been a subscriber to both XM and Sirius and after about a week of listening to XM I was sold. Better sports coverage, the XM Live stuff is great. Artist Confidential, decades, every genre... good stuf.. If you're into talk/news, many of the big names on Satellite are there. Hannity, FOX, NBC, CNN.... Disney for the kids... Opie and Anthony for the boys. Better all around.

I was considering one of these satellite radios, but they are still subscription and some can go from car to home (with antenna in the right place).

But around that time I got an EVDO card (Verizon, however Sprint has it), and I have broadband in most places and a slower link nearly everywhere else. With my laptop, I can listen to internet streams on my long drives across OH and PA (does either XM or Sirius work in the tunnels on the turnpike?). I have a couple of bookmarks with large icons, so my favorite stations - some I'm not anywhere near the actual stations - are just a click away. The EVDO card and service is more expensive ($60/mo), but I get DSL like speeds in the city anywhere (including in my home.

XM or Sirius might be better in some ways, but internet streams and podcasts are becoming more common.

Additionally, to address some reception problems on the FM Modulation side, I put a direct inline Modulator into my girlfriend's Sentra for her XM and it worked great:

http://www.cartoys.com/Default.cfm/p/SA10112_Delphi_XM_FM_Direct_Adaptor

Also, if you have a "direct" or "AUX" port on the front or back of your radio, you can go the direct route and the sound quality is great.

Someone spoke about poor sound quality on some of the stations. . . Not that I'm aware of, call the provider and ask then what's going on. Tell them where you are and what station it is so they can research it.

I have been an XM subscriber for 15 months. I'm not going to argue the virtues of XM or Sirius but will give my views and thoughts on XM Radio. I was enticed by a promotion from JC Penny and received a Roady II, 3 months of free service and free activation. When that ran out, I signed up for a year of service. I jumped in because I wanted to see what all the hype was about and other than having to buy some much needed clothes (JC Penny), it didn't cost me anything to try.

First off, I think most people like myself get one of these for the music - my only arguable point.

There's a lot more stations than music and those are just a bonus. I'm a huge sports fan. I love college basketball and the NFL and enjoy most other sporting events on TV. Notice I said TV, as I do rarely listen to any sporting event on satellite. If there is can't miss contest on, I'll find a place to watch it on the tube. It's nice to have a sporting event available, but after a year of XM it wouldn't be a recommendation nor justification from me as a reason to have the service.
It's all about the un-interrupted music for me, and XM does a nice job with a number of stations that are commercial free. Some are not as you may have read. I have a job as a designer, so I can listen to the XM stream over the Internet at work while I sit at my desk. I actually use this more that I use my car unit. My wife will also stream the music at her work. This is included in the monthly fee. I did buy a home kit that uses a different antenna than the one for the car. I use this at home (duh), at a camp in the Adirondack Mountains (with one of those portable car battery jumper pack thingy's and a boom box), and in my boat.
So I get a lot of use for the price. I truly think people get these for the music first, so I think both services provide similar channels from what others have told me. I have never had any problems with my Roady unit and it's been mishandled pretty good. I've pretty much locked into a channel called Deep Tracks, which to me is like listening to the underground FM stations of the 60-70's. Showing my age now, but I would almost say that this channel makes it worth the service alone. I do listen to the talk and comedy channels as well but am not happy with the advertising. Never have had problems with reception except for the occasional bridge, tunnel, or mountain blocking the signal.

As an early adapter to BOTH services I can tell you that Sirius is far far better then XM, and no, not because of Howard Stern. The music selection for my demo (25-44) is way better on Sirius. There is around 10 stations of Rock that I actually listen to on Sirius (14,15,16,17,18,19,21,22, 23,26,32). XM only had 1.5 channels I could listen to (top Tracks 46 and Deep Track 40 - only sometimes, they realy play some crap that no one has ever heard of on that channel)

The DJ's on Sirius know how to add the to music and shut up whereas XM DJ's seem to think I was paying to hear them talk.

When I droped XM last year after 2 years, they offered me 1 year at $50. In my view it was not worth it even at that price.

I got this reciever last christmas to replace my Roady 2. Plugging it in via the aux jack in my car introduced a horrid whine that wasn't present in the Roady 2. After trying to live with the poor sound of the fm transmitter ( compared to line-in) I recently switched back to the Roady 2. Still, for $40 after rebate it may be worthwhile...

Yeah, this one's gonna be ugly, I agree with the earlier poster. You'll find that many (most) of those who post a strong preference for one or the other are among the fans of either Stern (for Sirius) or O&A (for XM).

I've used both, and Music-wise, they're pretty close to a wash. Each has their own unique little niches that they specialize in. XM's specialty is a rather deep playlist, while Sirius' specialty is "micro-casting," tailoring channels for a VERY specific audience (for example, the all The Who channel, all Elvis channel, all Springsteen channel, etc.) I switched to Sirius for one specific channel that XM had and dropped, but there are a few channels on XM that I really miss (for example, Cinemagic).

Sports - well, XM has Baseball, Sirius has football. Personally, I find that baseball translates to radio much better than football does, but that aside, each offer compelling packages to fans of their particular sport. For me, I only listen to the hometown team radio play-by-play, and that I can pick up with an old AM radio should I so choose. I have no need for either baseball OR football on my satellite radio, but for those who like to listen to teams outside their market, it's a good thing.

Sirius gets NASCAR - but frankly, only the most diehard fans of that particular sport will get too much out of listening to coverage of races on the radio. It's yet another one of those niches that Sirius targets.

News and Entertainment - slight edge to Sirius on this one, but only ever so slight. If you're not an NPR fan, it's definitely a wash.

So - the upshot is, ignore a lot of the "Sirius sucks" "XM sucks" nonsense, because most of it is really just no more than fans of the two major personalities going back and forth. Whichever you end up with, it's much better than any terrestrial radio you can get.

Thank you for the mature comparison. I should be a Stern fan, but I'm not for some reason, being a 45 y.o. white male. Can't stand him. Music is my main need for any type of satellite. Sounds like a good deal.

I've used both Sirius and XM...XM has by far the larger music library (either that or Sirius just doesn't use all of theirs).

If you have eclectic tastes, or just don't want to listen to the same Top 100 in each genre, XM is a great choice. As far as NFL coverage, I listen to my XM during my 1 hour each way commute on weekdays...I'm not usually in my car for 3+ hours on Sunday afternoons...

Selecting Sirius just because of Howard Stern and NFL??? Hmmm...I have a bridge I'd like to sell to you...

Don't waste your money on XM! Go get SIRIUS! Better programming and they have Howard, NFL, NASCAR and true commericial FREE MUSIC!

BTW, it's only a matter of time before Sirius buys XM! Sales projections for XM have been reduced twice this year for failing to reach goals. Looks like someone is getting desperate!

Also Sirius has dedicated channels to ELVIS, THE WHO and THE ROLLING STONES not BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN (unless you know something we don't)

As far as O&A, They are censored similcasted from Free Radio and they are WANNA BE's Of STERN. If you thought Stern was good on FREE RADIO, The show is even better uncensored!!!!

I'm in a pickle... I like so called "deep playlists" and "obscure music" (metal) but I could care less about MLB on the radio. I would love to get good NFL coverage and NPR but would never listen to Stern. It seems like I need both XM and Sirius, which is not gonna happen, so I'm getting neither.

My wife got a car that has XM radio built in. She's a Red's fan living in Florida. She liked the MLB broadcasts so much, I got her this unit for the house. With gas prices so high, it was expensive to drive around during games. :-) My wife isn't especially tech savvy, but she can use this with ease. I paid about the same price for the unit at Circuit City, but without the free 3 months free or the rebate. I wish this Woot had been available when I was in the market.

I don't think either XM or Sirius has playlists tremendously deeper than each other. I've heard both and yes they both have repeats -- not on the same day, more like you'll hear the same song 2 days in a row on anything other than the pop stations.

Both are 1000 times deeper than radio (outside of college and non-profit stations). So if you want MLB get XM. If you want NFL get Sirius. If you want Howard, get Sirius.
