are you kidding me??? If you're going to go with a brand, go with Archos. Their quality and build are top notch. Almost everyone I know with an iPod has had a hard drive fail, batteries go to crap, or the whole thing stop working about 1 or 2 years in. I have an Archos gmini 400 and an AV400 and they are wonderfully reliable. I bought both of them used about 2 years ago and haven't had a single problem.

These are the best video players you can get for the money. I wanted to 100GB for a long time. My GF just broke my Ipod and if I had the money I'd DEFINITELY get this. Best woot ever. Too bad I'm broke.

Because it has a larger, higher resolution screen, and actually plays avi files. It also works like a hard drive so you dont have to use iTunes to get stuff on it. For video, ipod is pure crap.

The small size of the ipod is the great part you can through it in you pocket and have several of your favorate moves in your pocket. You can just convert avi to mpg 4. Is itunes just to user friendly for you? I know I hate organized media. I would much rather have a bunch of files on a hard drive. I am anti mac with most things but itunes and ipods are both great products. I keep my av cables handy pluged my ipod into my 120" projector and watched the Lost episode I missed, that I down loaded from itunes.

my summary of:
WHY THIS WOOT IS BETTER THAN ANY IPOD

-reliability. much better here in my experience and according to reviews i've hread
-brand. archos is good stuff. don't doubt it just because you havent heard of them.
-no DRM. copy files at will. rip DVDs and CDs, transfer them between computers, have allthe freedom you want to sync and play anywhere
-record right to the device
-TV output. take your movies on the road and to friends houses or just downstairs
-DVR functionality. it'll control your cablebox as you schedule it and record straight to the player for you to watch on your train ride to work or something.
-did I mention no DRM??
-you'll look cooler than everyone who just bought an ipod because they didn't wanna be left out. you'll have all the features you wish they had without being tethered to itunes and itms and only synching with one computer and all the other features ipods will never have.
-divx/xvid. all you downloaders know about these codecs and i'm sure you want this already. for those who don't know...abundant free (occasionally legal) content readily available (see "torrents" in description)
-replaceable batter (i bought an extra one on ebay to carry with me for long trips)
-large beautiful widescreen
-packs all this in a very nice compact package
-firmware updated regularly to keep things up to date with new features
-30GB is plenty of space for all the movies and music youll actually want to watch while you're away from home

if you have this much to spend and are looking at video ipods, just get this instead.

I've already got TCPMP on my Zire -- plays any video format I throw at it, at original framerate, with no conversion. If you have a recent Palm OS device, look into TCPMP (free).

The archos av500 is freaking sweet. I have the 100gb version and couldn't be happier. I don't know why anyone would call Archos "The wal-mart" of electronics now. I admit their earlier devices sucked, but the av500 has a superb processor, awesome battery life, a screen worth looking at, and the 100gb version has more storage than you will ever need. Also, Archos tech support is now very good. It also comes with software so you can convert just about any file the archos doesn't read into one it does with minimal compression losses.

To answer danielkitchener1, the av500 supports DivX version 5, but most files are now being encoded in DivX 6, which is a bummer and Xvid is not supported (but remember you can convert files!). However, the folks over at www.archopen.com are working on hacking the av500 so you can run launch a linux based OS on it. Then the possibilities are endless!!

got the archos av420 and i use it every day i've been in college. all 4 years no hiccups. beautiful screen, compatibility with divx, xvid, although some audio codecs wont read correctly in these video compressions. i'm sure in this update there are better features.

listen to more mp3's than videos. good quality. good batttery life. great all in one jukebox. i even use it as a spare HDD if i need too. av420 was a little more bulky, but i think this one's slimmed down.

what's up with the kid crying on the screen on the main page?

ah an oklahoma fan, understandable.

I have an Archos AV400 20Gb one. I love it. While the Ipod's interface is still the best, the firmware for this thing is much improved over the Jukebox Recorder (which I also have and, admittedly, the Jukebox Recorder sucks).

I almost bought a video Ipod last Christmas, but went with this instead for 3 important reasons:

1. No DRM crap to deal with. It doesn't look for it.
2. No software needed to push files. It shows up as a removeable drive. drag & drop, baby!
3. It's real easy to change the hard drive to a larger one.

I just upgraded mine from 20Gb to 100Gb.. no problems to report.

Ciao for Niao!
Chuck

A few holes here
I have never had problems with reliability with ipod

DRM is only on files you buy from Itunes (I know it is too much to ask people to buy a 99 cents) But if you have to share just burn as a MP3 disk or for a dc player and DRM stuff is gone

Ipod has several cables for you to use to play on a tv as I posted before I play my ipod on my pojector at 120" and it works great.

Granted the screen is bigger but to say large is a bit much

Mac updates there firmware all the time

As usual, I feel the need to go searching for the PDF USER'S MANUAL.

This looks so sweet! I have been looking for something that I can travel with to download my pictures from my camera so I don't have to travel with my laptop. And this will play movies too! (the other reason I carry my laptop).

This is perfect - now I just have to decide if I can afford it...

iPod reliability is quite good - anecdotal stories aren't statistics

-brand. archos is good stuff. don't doubt it just because you havent heard of them.

Apple is good stuff and we've heard of them

-no DRM. copy files at will. rip DVDs and CDs, transfer them between computers, have allthe freedom you want to sync and play anywhere

No DRM for iPod either - rip the same DVDs and CDs, etc, etc.

-record right to the device

OK, you've got me there - it's a feature I've never missed, but the iPod doesn't do it, unless there's some accessory that supports it.

-TV output. take your movies on the road and to friends houses or just downstairs

Just like the iPod

-DVR functionality. it'll control your cablebox as you schedule it and record straight to the player for you to watch on your train ride to work or something.

iPod doesn't. Of course, the iPod fits in your pocket.

-did I mention no DRM??

Yep, and I did too!

-you'll look cooler than everyone who just bought an ipod because they didn't wanna be left out. you'll have all the features you wish they had without being tethered to itunes and itms and only synching with one computer and all the other features ipods will never have.

I'm not tethered to iTunes, but even if I was, iPods can synch to more than one computer. And you won't be carrying a brick around!

-divx/xvid. all you downloaders know about these codecs and i'm sure you want this already. for those who don't know...abundant free (occasionally legal) content readily available (see "torrents" in description)

Easily converted to MPEG4

-replaceable batter (i bought an extra one on ebay to carry with me for long trips)

I replaced the battery in my 3G iPod (my three year old iPod) last month - all by myself!

-large beautiful widescreen

In an even larger package

-packs all this in a very nice compact package

If you're Paul Bunyan

-firmware updated regularly to keep things up to date with new features

Just like Apple!

-30GB is plenty of space for all the movies and music youll actually want to watch while you're away from home

Oh, you'll be surprised...

if you have this much to spend and are looking at video ipods, just get this instead.

please... you cant compare the 5th gen ipod to this.. the ipod video is a mp3 player that plays videos.. the Av500 is a full blown Portable Media Player. Until the real ipod video comes out, the Av500 is a better way to go if you watch vids. btw my 2nd woot!
