I disagree. I use them for my X-Box's connection to the wireless router across the house, and for that purpose it works fine, with no noticeable latency across the network.

As with anything RF it all comes down to other devices inserting RFI (Radio Frequency Interference) into the area. Also the construction of the room can cause problems. Things like Metal lathing for plaster in older homes can act as a shield to the signal...It could work great for one location and not at all in the next room.

Hi, there's a very easy way to help Mom, and it's fairly cheap. Amazon.com (and others) sell a Wireless Phone Jack Extension for about $26. Just plug and play, it gives you a phone jack at ANY electrical outlet in the house. I'm assuming the laptop has a built-in 56k modem. You won't be using the wireless capability.

Then bring the laptop to your house, download and install the Juno Free service from Juno.com, or get a Juno CD from them. They kinda hide the free service on their site, but look in the More Products section. They offer 1Gb free email service and 10 hours a month of free internet. I used them for years, works just fine for casual use and email. Tip - write the emails off-line, then dial up and send them all at once. 10 hours a month of surfing might just be enough for Mom, and free is always good. Good luck

You are a Nice Person, dheaven! I will look into it.

Could this be used to convert a wired video cam to wireless?
There must be some adapter that converts from USB>Ethernet right?
Would the cam response time be reduced?

I've got two old computers (w/ethernet) in the other room next to each other (wireless for these devices is NOT an option).
Can I put a hub/switch on them and connect to one (1) of these boxes and connect the other end to my router?

(I do have wireless G so if someone can suggest a cheap access point(?) that'll let me hook up two legacy ethernet devices to one antenna I'd like that info too. Once again I can use the hub/switch before plugging them into a 1 port uplink of sorts)

Thanks,
Gary

Ok, I have one of these........... Its a decent way to hook up a PC etc, to the internet, WITHOUT a wireless connection. I tested it from a distance of about 40-50 feet from my switch (connected to my cable modem) and was able to download a file to my laptop at about 100Kbps.........

The same laptop connecting to the Net via my 802.11g network downloaded at 300-400Kbps.......

If you have a Wifi network, and can use that, USE THAT. If you cant, this is a decent way to connect to the internet, browse, and download small-medium size files (ie, NOT movies that are 2Gb).

to answer your first question: yes you can do exactly as you describe.

second: I personally use Buffalo technologies Airstation G54 AP/Router. Been using for over two years and never had a single hiccup with wired or wireless devices and I routinely work on others computers and require interenet access on them while repairing and restoring. I have found over the years that if you have a specific brand of wireless product, that it is easier to incorporate and configure other products in the same brand line. I have had problems getting D-link and netgear to talk to each other flawlessly, or linksys and d-link. Always try to use the same brand of gear if you can.

I bought 3 of these a few months ago from woot, and I'm quite happy with them. I link my router to my printer and ReplayTV. It works quite well from upstairs to downstairs. They are probably 50-feet away.

yes, they would allow your ethernet connection from the wired video cam to be wireless to your hub/switch/router.

the equipment chain would be:

router-(cat5 cable)--playlink ---(wireless signal)--- playlink-(cat5 cable)-video cam

there are devices that plug into your USB port on a computer that provide both wired or wireless ethernet access.

You nailed it. I use these for my TiVo and they work fine for updating the channel lineups. But if I try to use this with TiVo desktop to move large program files from my TiVo to my PC, a 60 minute show takes about 9 hours to transfer... very very slow.

Also, if I use these with my laptop to browse the web, it is very slow and I drop connection sometimes.

So, all in all, they are *ok* depending on what you need them for.

Would this be ok to stream movies over? Or is the 1.5mibt speed too slow? If it is, someone suggest me a cheap good wireless bridge that will work with my dlink router.

I am awesome.

spin54, unless you have Business cable service or a dedicated T-1 you shouldn't experience any slowdown since the best speed a DSL/cable connection is going to get is going to be 1.5Mbits per second anyway. Maybe your slowness was cause by some other device in the same frequency range. These run in the 900Mhz range so some older cordless phones could interfere possibly. Just an idea.

Oh yeah, I have 2 pairs of these in my house and while yes, they are not as fast for internal network connections they are fine for Internet types of applications. I run the telnet connectivity for my CCIE lab console connection from one pair and my PS2 on the other pair. Hope this helps

Zangman

Well, 1.5 Mbps translates to less than 200 kBps, so I'm going to have to disagree. We get 3 Mbps cable service here, standard, and I regularly pull around 360 kBps. This would be much slower than my current Internet connection. The only thing these would be good for is playing games wirelessly over the Internet, not PC->Xbox file transfer, as the speeds you'll get out of this will be comparable to the speeds you connect to your ISP at, if not significantly slower.

You're not from around here, are ya? Woot!'s warranty is almost never more than 90 days - let's face it, they're really not trying to compete with Costco here.

Anyway, have you never bought a technology product from a store before? Very often the manufacturer's warranty is longer than the store's. So: if this dies on you on the 89th day, complain to Woot! - and if it dies on the 91st, complain to Logitech. Nothing fishy or suspicious at all.

I got the impression that Tim98TA was talking about a USB camera. There are plenty of USB Ethernet adapters, but they're just controllers with a USB interface; I don't know of one with any kind of built-in protocol layer. What you'd need would be some kind of USB<->Ethernet repeater pair...which would actually be pretty nifty (802.11 would be even niftier).

In any case, 1.5 Mb/s is an awfully narrow pipe for video.

I actually really needed one of these so I just grabbed one. We got rid of cable so I have to download anything I want to watch and play it off my modded Xbox. This device will save me from having to pull out that 100ft ethernet cable everytime I wanted to load something new onto the Xbox.

Unless you have a new Dual-Tuner or probably the HD box, TiVo's only have USB.

You would need a printer that explicitly says you can use it for network printing. If your printer doesn't have a place where you can plug in a network cable, then you can't use them for that.

Seriously, these were pathetic. I tried transfering a file across my room only to get so sick of waiting I gave up. I don't have a use for these at all with that speed.

I don't reccommend these at all.

Maybe others have better uses.

For me it seems it may be a decent solution. I have a network color laser printer that consumes so much power that it causes brownouts on anything else connected to the same power outlet. I just need to connect the printer across the room and don't really want to run cable for it. We don't plan on printing out entire books so this looks to be a cheap and decent solution for now until we move.

Mine appears to be doing the same currently. And past woot's do show the order info changed to say it has shipped with the tracking number for previous woots, so it appears they may still be working on getting them out.

The order says Nov 4th which would have been friday night/saturday morning. If they went out on time, most likely they would've gone out Monday. However, in the past I have received a woot before I got the tracking number.
