I would point out that the lamps cost $250.00 ea and only last for 4000 hrs, that corresponds to 3.7hrs a day for 3yrs. Also some CNet reviewers (JVC HD-61Z575) complained that 480i (SDTV) looked bad.

The TV at Overstock.com is NOT the same model. The difference is that the one on Overstock.com does not have the digital tuner. Also the overstock.com one is a refurb (rox0rz!). It's ot a new one like the one at WOOT. Two big differences. These were mentioned earlier in the day on these pages.

One other note about resolution. 720p has more lines of resolution per second than 1080i because 1080i only sends half of the screen data on each pass, so you get 1080 lines in two sweeps but you actually get 1440 lines in 720p. People have been discussing which is better for 5 years, but in practice, it's virtually impossible to tell them apart and some TV networks transmit in 720p while others use 1080i, so no matter what your set's naitive resolution is, the set will have to adapt to the specific data being sent.

We may see a difference when 1080p takes hold in a few years, though I'm not expecting to feel too compelled to run out and dump my 1080i TV because of it. This may or may not be the best deal around, but it looks like a good TV and includes the ability to directly decode digital CATV broadcasts which is a nice bonus for a very fair price.

The products bearing the Westinghouse name are made by chimei or some weird named company over in Asia and have absolutley no relationship with CBS or Viacom. Their TVs are cheaply made low end TVs - which is why they are available for such low prices. Yes, its 1080p, but its a value at best, it doesnt have the best specs and does not display the best image when compared to reputable brands like sharp, sony and yes - JVC.

I, respectfully, disagree with your subjective assessment of their products. The reason we bought them was because they repeatedly caught our eye(s) in comparison to all the other 'reputable' and way over-priced brands, imho. Our 42" 1080p set is impressive in it's picture and is astonishing on HD signals, and has worked flawlessly with Xbox360, PS2, PC, and now, WII. All the reputable brands as you call them were new at some point. The current group running Westinghouse has put out top notch products at at price point that has made the others have to lower their costs.

It appears that the only item that is designed to fail is the bulb and from looking at the posts it is costly. I may have missed it but did not see if there was an extended warranty available. There usually is so how do you purchase it when buying the set and does the extended warranty cover the bulb?

I do have one, but have not noticed any excessive heat generated by the system. I live in Texas, so I'll be sure to let you know aroung July or August. If it does, I suppose it will be the most rockin' lawn ornament on my street. As far as the standby power usage goes, I couldn't tell you. I rarely go out & read my meter and have average billing on my electric bill. I do love the set though. It's a no-brainer for the price.

I have done a little research after reading some of the posts here, and according to one repair service, the cooling system in this product needs adequate ventilation in order to keep the bulb from blowing. It is also suggested that it be periodically cleaned with compressed air (fan, bulb, etc) because it can cause additional heating in the unit. All in all, if one does the research, and knows the maintenance needed for this item, you should have a good experience with it. Still, it seems to me that I feel better waiting for the technology to improve in regards to overheating, and the bulb life. $200 out of pocket for a replacement bulb every 1,000 hours of veiwing time seems rather steep. Just MHO.

Yes , very good info but is there an extended warranty available and will it cover the bulbs? Sorry if this is something already covered but I did not see it and a purchase hinges on the availability and cost of an extended warranty.

According to my research...no, the bulb is not covered by extended warrenty past the one year mark, even if you purchase additional. Perhaps that is wrong, but after all the posts I have read, and some from service techs, that appears to be the case. Of course, it could also depend on where you make your purchase from. Sears seems to have the contention that "happy customers are returning customers"...hmmmmmm.....I wonder if that works? LOL
Also, unless you are willing to take a little flesh when you fight JVC for the replacement bulb, you may not ever get one. One of the best places for information I have found on this subject is:

http://forum.ecoustics.com/bbs/messages/board-topics.html

A lot of service people, and engineers, etc.

Won't stop me from buying one if so. I have never been accused of not taking a pound of flesh If I need to, to get what I think I paid for in the first place

I did a little more checking around and found this warranty provider. (one of many) One of the repair centers they use is near and real good. I used them in the past. It looks like they offer a bulb protection plan. All the plans also feature a yearly cleaning service which addresses the heating issue. The plan on the link is the lowest cost plan that only offers repair not replacement. http://www.repairtechinc.com/prp.asp

I bought the similar model TV (JVC HD-61Z886) from Woot a few months ago and love it. The only down sides are black levels tend to blur together, so things in shadow will all tend to blur into 1 dark mass and the bulb does put out a LOT of heat. You need to keep it about 14" inches from the back wall due to heat discharge from the set. The bulb is rated at 6000 hours so if it lasts anywhere near that long 250$ is chump change on it. The set takes about 1 minute to actually turn on due to bulb warm up and 90 seconds to shut off bulb cool down. So accidently shutting it off kinda sucks.

I've seen a few posts about stands, I went with this:
http://www.ikea.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?topcategoryId=15561&catalogId=10103&storeId=12&productId=76525&langId=-1&categoryId=15962&chosenPartNumber=00105342
in black and removed the feet, works great and is the perfect height for my veiwing prefernce (all the other stands I found were too high). Its pretty much the exact right width as well.

Get an HDMI switcher such as:
http://monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=101&cp_id=10110&cs_id=1011002&p_id=2777&seq=1&format=2
and life will be much more pleasant if you have multiple HDMI devices.

Also of note, the delivery plan is for them to deliver it to your curbside only, I slipped the delivery guys a 20 and they were more than happy to lug it up to my place.
