Bought this same TV a few weeks ago on Woot for $90 more and LOVE LOVE LOVE it. Bought the matching stand for $100 shipped (find the link in the thread for that woot) and have been nothing but thrilled. Haven't had any problems whatsoever. Switched from satellite to cable, upgraded my TiVos to the new Series3 HD models with two cable cards each and TV has never been better. The high def is amazing and the kids are thrilled. Can't get my 9-year-old to stop watching Discovery HD Theater and the National Geographic Channel. If you've got the cash and don't need to wall-mount your TV, this is a helluva nice unit.

Um, did anyone read the description?

"Supported DTV Resolutions: 480p, 720p, 1080i, 480i"
"4th Generation D.I.S.T. w/Genessa 720p – detects and seamlessly up-scales any video source to display at 720p"

This supports more than 720p, it's just that it turns SDTV into something better

A huge difference? $155, after shipping, is a huge difference? When you are comparing a brand new tv versus a factory reconditioned tv? And you're only getting it for $155 dollars less?

What planet are you from?

Everybody who is whining about 720p vs. 1080i/1080p, have you actually seen the two side by side? Or are we just whining because one number is bigger? Once you get to 61", yes, you can start to see a bit of a difference, but it sure isn't a cave painting. Resolution doesn't count nearly as much as color accuracy, brightness and contrast control....

Oh, wait, I can only read numbers. 1080>720! Down with anything that is a lower number!!!!

like the commercial for direct tv with jessica simpson not knowing 1080p but wanting it...

the "bigger" number that turns me off here: 103
yeah, the WEIGHT. its "cheaper" than plasmas and lcds sure, but its smurfing huge.

but can anybody tell me from actual experience what the picture is like on this thing? What does it compare to?

I cant tell the difference between 720p and 1080i for high detail action stuff. 1080i looks clearer than 1080p for still images (not that this is a photoviewer or anything).
As far as the JVC brand, I havent owned anything from them since 1991, a small GR65U camcorder that was stolen at a party when I broke up a fight. Bastards. Anyways, it was great for the month I owned it. Thats when people actually still said "Wow! A camcorder!" unless it was a big honker on your shoulder with full sized VHS tapes *haha*

Then again, for $200 for a reliable LCD picture frame, you might as well buy this instead. I dont think you can go wrong for this ballpark price, but if you want to wait a bit, prices and quality will continue to fall by spring.

Never wooting again. I've learned my lesson about inferior customer service and employees that illegally modify your signature (18 U.S.C. § 1029). Grow up, woot. (Edit of Mod edit: I am telling the truth about you modifying my signature to slander me. I am not attacking people. You dont qualify as "people" until you call me back and I hear a voice on the phone, then we can discuss how your employees are harassing me.) Still no response Since December 2010.

Not only is it a huge difference, but it's also a different model. That one is a HD-61Z585; this one is HD61Z456. And no, I have no idea what the difference is.

UPDATE: Actually, I do know what the difference is. The one you linked to is only HD-ready, meaning it doesn't include a tuner. This one on Woot does. Big difference.

Oh, and the one on Overstock is a refurb (rox0rz!).

I bought a similar model to this or the same I think though I think this one is slightly different off a previous woot and overall I must say I am amazed at the picture quality. First off lets totally get out of the 720p vs 1080p argument as the differences wont matter for years until surrounding technology such as the movie industry and tv catch up and for the idiot who thinks 1080p is the best just wait 6 months and they will have an even higher resolution.
I digress and must get back to the TV. The downside is only one HDMI and no DVI, and I know you can buy an adaptor but I think its nice to have. The TV looks much better and has much better color tones than any LCD flatscreen on the market, and it is on par if not better than most plasmas. I really do love this product and the chip used to upscale does a wonderful job. I am a video editor and all of our work is in SD currently and I will be moving next month to the Sony hvr v1s which shoot 1080i or 720p max. So depending on your application this TV will make SD look great and HD should look awesome. We have hooked up an xbox 360 and Madden is stunning. This TV gets some of the best size in terms of inch for the money in the TV realm. I do believe this TV has a 1080p model and it is around 2k...so if 1500 is ur limit buy it!

chewiem16 wrote:booooo!!! how can you have 720p at this size?? *sigh*

Because unless you want a stupidly large picture, you buy a TV based on how far you will be sitting from it.

For someone buying a 61" TV for a big room versus someone buying a 32" TV for a small room, the distance from the picture will likely make the difference between 720p and 1080(i/p) indistinguishable. I can watch my 37" from 20' away and see it just fine.

If you are buying it to have a stupidly large picture (like sitting 6' away) then yeah, you may want 1080p.

I was trying to figure out how big a 61" screen is and if I have my geometry right we're talking a crib mattress... the full size kind they call a toddler bed now. Thats a big TV.

JVC makes defective TVs and then won't stand behind their products. JVC projection TVs are known to develop severe convergence problems after 2-3 years. Just be aware if you buy a JVC television.

KcasMij

I like the fact that this TV has a processor that can upconvert a signal to a higher qualitiy. I think thats the big plus of this tv. Also people need to realize that 720p is better in some aspects then 1080i. Remember progressive means you get the whole immage in one passover. Interlaced means there are two passovers occuring to make 1 immage. Additionally most programming isn't comming in at 1080p, so whats the point of haveing a Ferrari on a 55mph road?
By the way...all this extra clarity isn't always what its cracked up to be...I remember when I had my HD TV playing a 480p dvd of the matrix, and my God is morhpeus's face hideous looking.
For you people talking about the wonders of plasma, I hope you don't enjoy playing video games or never leave your dvd on pause. They are suseptible to the classic burn in of the old projection TV's.
I encourage you all to go out and do research on what type of TV suits your style best, and get one that you need, but don't pay an extraordinary amount of money, as technology is changing so rapidly right now you'll just be buying one in another 2 years.

I have to say - I have the inFocuc 61" 720p set from a few Braille on Cookies ago, and really 720 ain't that bad. I don't see that well, no broadcast is in 1080p, and while game systems will display different resolutions, most games are 720 native.

Oh well, was hoping for something more along the lines of yesterday's woot, but I don't have 1500 laying around with xmas two weeks away.

And for the comments in reguards to the 720 vs 1080, what is pleasing to your eye's may very well not be pleasing to mine, everyone see's things in a slightly different manner. As for the quality not being able to be truly taken advantage of with current broadcasting and DVD's and so on, you may be right, to a point, however I don't plan on buying a new TV every 5 months, I'd rather buy something with the latest feature set for the best price. So..anyway, 1:20am, time to go to bed, guess I'll see you all again tomorrow night, same time, same bat channel..

Nexxtech 7" 16:9 LCD Portable DVD Player
Jepson Winery Mendocino Mix
