Today's rear projection TV's are a lot more compact than those from a few years ago but they are still way too big to hang on a wall. This one is 18 inches deep compared to some plasmas or LCD's that are only 4 inches deep.

yeah!

Or perhaps common sense could come into play, and since it does not say LCD or Plasma ANYWHERE in the title or product name, you should know that it is neither a plasma or an LCD. Do they need to point out that its silver and rectangular for you too or can you handle those yourself?

Ambilight is a feature (trademark name for backlit) of Philips TV, not a Panasonic.

Chances are if you now it's ambilight, then it is a Philips not a Pannie.

This is not the same model that woot! is offering. Also, although I am not familiar with the Web site you referenced, I do remember that in previous discussions some people had negative buying experiences at some of the "...camera.com" Web sites.

http://www.soundandvisionmag.com/hdtvs/1258/jvc-61-inch-hd-ila-hdtv.html

The review link JayBent provided above is very detailed and basically very flattering. Worth a read. Again remember when the review was written the retail value of this TV was over $4,000. I wonder what the reviewer might have said at less than $1,500. He liked the brightness, color fidelity, lack of discernible pixel even sitting closer than recommended, as well as the quality of a fed 720p signal. He was less enthusiastic about the detail of the black tones of the color spectrum. The color and detail was impressive. At 1080i using cable provided content he saw some issues at extreme long lens focus. That's probably true of all models all brands at some type of broadcasts. But he could distinguish the material of the clothes of the expectators at a basketball game. The 420 stuff (pinchusioning or bowing at the edges) was weird, but the day you buy a very large expensive HDtv you will discover that regular 4:3 non digital TV (non HDTV also) sucks on high end tv. If you only watch non digital channels dont buy a large TV... they shine with digital, HD and DVD shows. but highlight the warts of the older technology. (PS: cartoons look good in all definitions).

I have a DLP 61" thats at least 3 yrs old. I have another room I'm shopping around a TV for and was going to hold out for the next generation (1080p) but at this price and quality may pull the trigger.

Again I think a good 720p is hard to differentiate from 1080i.
1080i is technically higher but the "i" means it's interlaced (a certain subliminal flicker)
but lets face it 1080p material via cable is lonnng away...
Realistically 2-3 yrs away before it is as ubiquitous at 1080i.

(an earlier post described a perfectly matched stand shipped at $100).

All in all, this is an excellent buy for the money AND the quality...
and don't forget the $5 shipping.

----UPDATE--------
Half an hour later: ignore my 1080p price comment above (the content comment still stands)
while looking at some 1080p HDTVs listing for close to $10k,
there is one at Tiger Direct 1920x1080p for $1899.99 no shipping charges and no taxes unless you live in FL, IL or NC...

My brother had one of these (not exactly this model but a JVC HD-ILA) and a color "gun" died just after the 1 year warranty was up.. it would of cost as much to fix it as to buy a new one so it got dropped off at good will and written off on taxes.

Everybody who is whining about 720p vs. 1080i/1080p, have you actually seen the two side by side? Or are we just whining because one number is bigger? Once you get to 61", yes, you can start to see a bit of a difference, but it sure isn't a cave painting. Resolution doesn't count nearly as much as color accuracy, brightness and contrast control....

Oh, wait, I can only read numbers. 1080>720! Down with anything that is a lower number!!!!

In late Oct 2006 I bought JVC TV from Woot for $1589 plus $5 shipping. I got it in Early Nov and went to Fry's to buy some cable next day. Same TV was selling for $999 as they opened a new Fry's. I tried to return it to Woot or pay the difference. Fisrt they wanted 15% restocking plus shipping of $214. When I escalated then only shipping was $214. However, the box it came in was broken to take it out so I did not return the TV and lost about $600. Therefore, for big items local stores are the best places.

That's not true. It depends. If you shop around and compare prices before you jump on something just because it's on woot or posted on another deal site, you don't need to worry as much. Amazon.com generally has some of the lowest prices on TV's and will pay shipping back to them if it's defective. Won't price adjust, but there's an answer to that - get a credit card you can PM on.

In-store is cheaper if you have a Fry's or maybe J&R nearby, but for most people the price one tv's is >150% of what you'll find online (for instance BB or CC etc...), if you know how to shop.

Note to Dimatteo, and every one else: The Overstock TV is refurbished (read: "factory reconditioned), and not the same model number. So free shipping does not make that a better deal, as the Woot item is new.

BUYER BEWARE
Do some investigate browsing before deciding the link above is better...
I did and this is what I found:

The shopping.nj.com link DOES show the exact model as being available at 6th ave store in nj.. for $1188
However, when you do go to the 6th ave stores website (the nj.com website is an ad displaying site for shops): which is listed on nj.com as WWW.6AVE.COM you will find it says "sorry, selection not available".... when you search for that tv.. i even tried other / any jvc tv's and Nada...zippo... zilch...
I tried different ways within their website and the closest I got to it was a request to enter my zip code... (which is NOT NJ)...

If anybody can show 6ave has it
and it's really available via website
post it here...
(don't forget to add the s&h)

It clearly tells you that it is a D-ILA TV. It's not really DLP, and it states that in the descrption, which I found amusing. It does NOT anywhere state that it is a Plasma or LCD. That should also be clear if you look at the depth. Oh, and if you didn't know what D-ILA was, Wikipedia has a great explanation for you. Please don't ask stupid questions or accuse my beloved woot of such falicies.

Wizzy, you are absolutely correct. I'll try to be more accurate in the future. God knows that typos & innaccurate info will not go unnoticed around here, which is perfectly alright by me.

By the way, for all of you folks that sit around licking your chops in anticipation of finding a weakness or shortcoming in a product so that you may put on display your wealth of technical knowledge, do me and everyone else on here a favor. Rather than knock what's here, tell us what else is out there. If you want to spew specs, that's fine, just don't forget to include the price.

What the hell is your problem? I believe that one should be able to make fun of anything... that means ANYTHING, whether it's race, religion, political views, or the army if one so desires. Besides, it was your friend's choice to join the army knowing all of the risks that come with that choice. Oh, and the TV is $1499 and it's well worth the price. Yes, if you plan on keeping your next TV for 10 years, do not buy this one. If you're thinking more in the up to 5 years range, then go right ahead. Personally I replace my living room TV quite often, every 3 years or so, as I do my cars, and all of my cool toys and gadgets, so this is a great price for a great TV that does very well with today's HD dish and cable which comes in at 720P. Even with a 1080P signal I can't tell from across the living room, where I'm sitting on my couch, 18 ft. from the screen.
