I wonder feature-wise, what's to compel someone from getting this over a new Windows Mobile phone. I've got an HTC Wizard. Small in size (both in screen and physical dimensions) and/but it's also a phone with a slide-out keyboard along with the touch screen... you can typically get a Windows Mobile phone like this for about $400 less.

If what you want is a tiny, portable PC (something to replace a casual-use laptop?), tonight's woot seems to be the way to go, but if you just want something to take care of common tasks like email, office documentation, internet browsing, etc. I wonder why you'd spend the money when you can get the best set of functions in a WM phone.

if it was also a phone, i'd go for it. if mabye they had a built in phone antenna and phone software on it, to have it in a powersave phone-only mode, that would be worth puchasing. everything everyone always wanted. everything. (of course, they would also need built in gps for it to have everything)

I know someone will ask so I'll just provide the answers.

This computer can run Linux.

You can install Vista on this computer but it will not support the Aero interface. It will also run very slow and the CPU and memory cannot be upgraded.

You can run Windows Server 2003.

It will work with an Ipod.

WOOT UP TO BAT!
It a high fly to center field. It's going, going, and caught for an easy out way short of the wall.
Woot, a good try, but this isn't a great deal. It's a high price for an item that will be useless within a year. If you have money to burn, buy it. Otherwise, you can find something similar with better battery life for under $300 somewhere. This is overpriced and only good if you have money to burn.
Woot is now back under .500 at 2 for 5 (.400). Last night was a give me, because once I researched the item, it was a mistake to give you a hit. But can't reverse the call, no reply on this report.

You mean everything that isn't found on a CD-ROM and DVD-ROM, right?

This is an expensive PDA... actually, that may be insulting to windows-mobile based PDA's everywhere (which support 802.11g).

You know, the text message announcing this told me the price was $7. I know typos happen, and it's not so much that I mind terribly, but in the future if we didn't maybe have prices so wildly wrong that I throw old women and small children out of the way to reach my computer, that would be good. Just something to consider working on for the future. No pressure.

cowykillr wrote:too much for my budget as well...

Well, this meets most of the requirements for "Vista Capable": Processor is better than minimum of 800 MHz; RAM meets minimum of 512 MB; GPU supports minimum 800x600; and it has a bit of VRAM. The video hardware won't run the AERO desktop, and the installation of Vista would take 15 GB of the 30 GB of hard drive space. But the main problem looks to be no optical drive to install from, unless you could attach one via USB or Firewire. So, mainly for the RAM, I wouldn't bother trying to install it.

UGH, I'd love this but have an unsold 20GB PS3 (Bought 60GB to free up my Woot Logitech freeplay thingies or whatever they're called, no name on them & I trashed the box) and now I need a new media tower to hold my 400 DVD changers >< BAH!

This thing lives up to ALL the hype, and I was lucky enough to sit next to a guy on the plane that had one. I stopped asking him about it because he had ass-breath and I wanted him to stop talking. I pretended to sleep and leaned as far away from him as I could get. Anyways, he was using some spreadsheet software and organizing his DVD collection which I thought was perfect for my needs.

Sadly, I must pass despite my financial well-being at the moment.

Never wooting again. I've learned my lesson about inferior customer service and employees that illegally modify your signature (18 U.S.C. § 1029). Grow up, woot. (Edit of Mod edit: I am telling the truth about you modifying my signature to slander me. I am not attacking people. You dont qualify as "people" until you call me back and I hear a voice on the phone, then we can discuss how your employees are harassing me.) Still no response Since December 2010.

Wow the only thing that would be cooler would be if they'd let you pay for it in three easy payments of $49.99 and one really hard payment of $655.02. :-)

Actual looks like something I've been looking for for the car. I'd mount a real car computer under the seat with a real keyboard and mouse and use this machine and it's bluetooth wireless (or 802.11) to connect to the car computer under the seat. That way you've got full power computer mobile yet you don't have to worry about the screen bumping into the steering wheel. Would make seeing large maps a little tough but might be a nice trade off for easier mounting. Plus you could take it outside of your car and use the wireless to keep talking to the car computer.

Aah now if I can just get those payments arranged.

You should look into getting an Garmin Ique.

The GPS capability is much better and an Ique only costs about $250 (including the GPS maps). The M Series has Windows operating system and will support 802.11g wifi cards.

If you absolutely need the smallest PC you can carry, this is it.

The "slow", non-x86 CPU is not significant for Word, Outlook, and the like. Where the CPU (and, lets not forget, the integrated graphics chip) really hits you is in startup performance, VIsta support, and anything beyond basic web-browsing and e-mail.

If you want more power (especially video and CPU horsepower for games and better potential Vista performance) a small laptop with dedicated graphics (like the Dell XPS1210) would be a better choice.

Good luck!

I hate to be a whiner, folks. But when are portable PC makers going to get serious about displays? A five-by-three-inch TFT screen to show an entire Windows PC 800x480-resolution desktop?!?! Can you imagine trying to read text on this sucker? Even if I kicked the resolution down (if it is even possible to go further down than 800x480!) & put the default text size up to "Extra Large Font", we'd still have an issue viewing web pages and documents.

Furthermore, how much Windows software supports such a small resolution? Any technophile that would purchase this likely wants to play games on it, surf the web, etc. If it's just being used for e-mail & contact info, one is better off with a PDA.

I was playing higly interactive VR games in the early 1990s, where you simply donned a helmet and the viewscreen was a stereoscopic vision display built into the helmet. That technology HAS to have come quite a bit further by now. Why aren't we seeing relatively affordable sunglass-style mono or stereo displays yet?

DON'T FEAR THE REAPER!

Explain how it will be worthless in a year? And show us the similar items under $300 with better battery life? I dont know of any PDAs/UMPC that practically fit in your pocket and have 512mb, BT, wifi, USB2/firewire, roll out keyboard, touchscreen with DVD quality resolution, ability to run all of your desktop apps etc etc etc for under $800, let alone for under $300.

I dunno. My problem with this is the price vs what you get.

I can go to the Microcenter five minutes up the street and I know they're going to have a couple bargain laptops for the same price.

Yes, that would mean you couldn't hold it in your fat fingers, but the balance is you get a ton more use out of it.

I dunno, if it suits a particular need, cool. For the most part, though, I don't see many people with a particular need, and the few needs I can think of (like inventory or other applications) can be done much cheaper on other units.

I think I just peed myself with happiness.

You can still get a very cool PocketPC / cell phone combination device that runs Windows CE, Pocket Office, IE, and thousands of other programs out there. If you get a few accessories for the PocketPC then it replaces all of the following traditional devices and does a much better job for less than half the price:

  • cell phone / speaker phone
  • PDA
  • mp3 player / crap-i-pod
  • radio
  • remote control
  • portable dvd / video player
  • gps / moving map devices like TomTom
  • laptop (for most travel needs PPC works fine)
  • usb thumb drive
  • external hard drive
  • cable or dsl modem (as long as your cell carrier has high speed service)
  • dozens of arcade game consoles with thousands of games (MAME, NES, etc.)
  • bluetooth / wifi

The best such device is the Audiovox XV-6600 also sold under many other names including Sprint PPC-6600, HTC Blue Angel, etc. Recently discontinued since the new version has a smaller screen but this makes the older unit more valuable IMHO. You can find these units in like-new shape all over ebay for $100-$200 and then plan on another $100-$200 for accessories unless you already have those or don't want them. I have three of these personally and have helped many friends and coworkers purchase them as well. This seller has the best quality units and price combination IMHO, just got another for a Christmas gift and they love it. Only thing is to make sure you get a good case since one hard drop can kill the screen. Also get the insurance from your cell carrier which is $5 per month and then if you drop it or it is stolen they will replace it with the newer more expensive unit.

Business 2.0 reports OQO is preparing a new model with cellular capability.

Improved OQO handheld PC will have cellular
Interesting tidbit from someone who would know: The next OQO handheld PC, which could be out as soon as the Consumer Electronics Show in January, will have a brighter screen, improved keyboard, more memory, a bigger hard drive and wide-area wireless capability,

I am awfully temped by the display. Compared to the Epson picture storage units this is a lot of power for very little more.
However, the short battery life and very high price of spares is discouraging.

Anyone considering buying one of these should take a serious look at the Sharp Zaurus 3200 that sells for about $511 at PriceJapan.com (a very reputable company).

The Zaurus runs Linux and has been around (as earlier models; the 5500; c-700 thru c-860, C-3000, and C-3100) for well over 5 years and has tons of free software and plenty of cool uses. It also has a clamshell design, which protects the screen much better than a tablet style without needing a case.

Anyway, here is a link:
http://www.pricejapan.com/front/e_good_info.php?code=28&category=5

And if you want more info, just google it and you will find tons of sites for apps, games, hacks, and support...

This is a good woot, but honestly, I think the Zaurus is much better overall and a heck of lot more portable/pocketable.

Ciao!

If someone can explain it to me, go for it!

It fits in your pocket. If you drag laptops around airports much, that is a big deal. The docking cable allows connection to full size monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc. at your desk. But on the road...it fits in your pocket. Hands free for your other carry-on and a latte. However, the cell phone/broadband wireless capability is the next generation. It's probably worth waiting for.
