This thing is like Paris Hilton in high heels:

* It's "hot."
* Runs slow.
* Tough to watch for a long time.

Hey, WOOT! - It appears the OQO website sez this has USB 1.1, not 2.0, as stated in the blog.

I spoke too soon - elsewheres on the OQO website it sez the thing DOES have USB 2.0. My bad.

I have wanted one of these for almost a year now since I saw it make an appearance in the last Alias Series and Mission Impossible 3. I saw the woot, almost hit I want one, cause I priced it out at almost 2k at OQO when you add the big battery and Office 2003 pre-installed (didnt know what kind of problems id run into with such a small drive and processor). Then thankfully I read comments on the new one coming out with cellular. I will wait for it, but may change my mind if this is still around tonight.

People are asking whats the reason for this is? Try lugging a computer bag and carry-on through airport security at least once a week when with this i could get rid of the bag, and pack cables in my carry-on (including docking cable). I have dreamt of pulling this outta my pocket like I do my MDA now. If you have ever tried to fill out invoices on Windows Mobile 5 word to a portable printer, its like pulling teeth. If you travel all the time. Need access to files, and the the ability to "set up shop" almost anywhere, this is for you & me. If you dont need it for those reasons, its just another toy and you dont NEED to be ultra mobile. Hence the name.

In reading some of the reviews, one great use for this device popped up. You could use it to watch shows TV /saved shows via slingbox. 1 review said the battery lasted 2 hours doing just that. I think that use would be great for the traveller/road warrior.

It fits in your pocket. If you drag laptops around airports much, that is a big deal. The docking cable allows connection to full size monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc. at your desk. But on the road...it fits in your pocket. Hands free for your other carry-on and a latte. However, the cell phone/broadband wireless capability is the next generation. It's probably worth waiting for.

Ive got a buddy who has the previous model of the oqo and it still works great. Hes had the damn thing for coming on 2 or 3 years i think. It travels very well and holds its.... uh, charge holding ability (how can i put this....) very well also (after 2-3 years of rather heavy use, my buddies older oqo still gets abt. 90 mins on a charg)
If you have the money, its not a bad buy. they're very dependable in what ive known of them

Lasareath wrote:Buy a Raon Vega, the battery lasts 5.0Hours!

I kind of like the Vega, however the biggest problem in my mind is the lack of internal WiFi and Bluetooth. It does include a USB WiFi adapter, however that's just not the same; a USB or CardBus adapter sticking out of your computer is at risk of being broken off. Also, Bluetooth would be nice, but I consider WiFi absolutely essential, with Bluetooth being useful primarily for interface devices (mouse, etc.)

The best reasons to get the Vega are the small size, long battery life, and reasonable price, at around $900. The only thing I'm unsure about is the AMD Geode processor; I'm sure it works well enough in this UMPC, but there's just very little actual analysis of it (I think the Vega is the first, or one of the first commercial applications of that CPU.)

Check it out here:

I just wanted to add that the Archos PMA430 that was just sold here on WOOT is a great alternative to a device like the OQO; the Archos is not nearly as powerful as the OQO, however it is basically a tiny computer running Linux. Both have 30GB of storage and 802.11b, along with digitizers (touch-screens.) You can install many applications on the PMA430, including productivity applications and games (a.k.a. "unproductivity" applications ;)

All that for $300.... While the OQO does have better hardware almost all around, it's just not worth the extra $500. The main advantage here is the ability to run full versions of desktop operating systems (Windows, Linux, etc.)

I just thought about the above while reading other users' comments about similar, but more attractively priced devices. I'm glad I bought one. Of course, this doesn't help anyone else since the PMA430 is no longer available on WOOT (although you could buy it somewhere else for more money.)

The one mentioned in the PC world article was the first version that came out over two years ago. It had no tablet capability, half the amount of RAM, and a smaller hard drive. This one is the next generation model.

I have been waiting on a deal for this device. I intend to use it for business trips where I presentations using powerpoint. This will work great in that role. It will be much nicer to carry this smaller device rather than a whole laptop. It is not for everyone, but it definitely has its uses.

I just bought one.
i also have the earlier model and I am planning on selling the older model which i am sure will be sold on ebay for almost the price on this new model. This way, i will be able to have a new computer for the price i pay for the older one.
It does get really hot though. Expecting the new model not to be as hot.
And if you are waiting for the newer model to be released, really, really, better have 2,500 since that pretty much their introductory price.

For those wondering why they just wouldn't use their PDA ... I have the T-Mobile MDA. Works great, does a lot of nice things. However, it is not a laptop replacement. Windows Mobile will allow you to limp along while at an airport or killing time in a boring meeting. Other than that it is simply a big phone with a slide out keyboard.

This PC is portable, can run most Windows apps AND it can be docked for use with a full size keyboard and display through a monitor. I could really see this as a laptop replacement.

That being said, I don't have one myself. Not sure I would want to drop $800 to find out if this thing is really as cool as I think it would be.

If you wanted to be dishonest and steal for a living, the smart thing to do would be:

Buy one brand new at a local store and make a photocopy of the legitimate receipt. Now return the unit you just purchased but keep the original receipt or at least a photocopy of the receipt. Then buy a second unit from a cheaper source like woot being careful to ensure they are the same exact model / packaging / barcode. Finally return the second unit at a local store along with your authentic receipt, preferably at a different outlet that won't recognize you.

Of course this amounts to retail theft by deception and carries similar penalties to shoplifting or writing bad checks. I know because I have prosecuted several cases for this, one of which was severe enough that the secret service was involved due to other factors. Also, be advised that some store systems may be smart enough to flag the item as returned on the first trip, then when the same receipt is used to make the second return their system will reject or decline the refund, or possibly prompt them to give you a gift card, or just have you arrested...

Thats true for my tablet pc, but not true for my Palm or my HP version of this (rx5915) fingers work very well indeed, providing you can actually hit the little spaces, so a pen does work better but isn't the only way to access the screen.

I forgot to add the "Bluetooth-compatible" caveat that is necessary with any portable device. ;) Of course, wireless video would be very difficult, me'thinks....considering the bandwidth that would be necessary.

However, now that I've looked at such a product, I'm not sure I'd want one anymore. Unless, of course, it was combined with a Senseboard Virtual Keyboard, a Kitty device, or any of the many other v-keyboard technologies (provided the v-keyboard can be used blindly, as you're eyes would be pretty well usurped by the stereoscopic display).

Maybe I've read too much cyberpunk in my life, but I'm thinking that by the time I'm 40 (ten years), most technology should be nigh-completely portable and wireless, except for power sources.

DON'T FEAR THE REAPER!
