The unit LOOKS pretty nice, however I've been very interested in UMPCs (Ultra Mobile PCs) for a while now, I've even got my own ^_^ I'm using a Sony UX 180p ( Sonystyle.com link )
Though the UX is powerful for its size (1.2GHZ CPU, 1GB of RAM) it leaves me begging for better performance.
My first thoughts when looking at this item, is "who's ever heard of OQO?" I certainly haven't and I'm a gadget geek when it comes to this stuff. The fact that I haven't even heard of the thing make me untrustworthy. Also, I see hardly any heat venting, looks like heating could cause bad problems with this device, but I can't say for sure because I don't own one : )

its pretty cool, but I dont need it. I already am building a laptop and with PDA's being what they are this is just too expensive to buy. Still, its pretty cool.

If you wanted to be dishonest and steal for a living, the smart thing to do would be:
Buy one brand new at a local store and make a photocopy of the legitimate receipt. Now return the unit you just purchased but keep the original receipt or at least a photocopy of the receipt. Then buy a second unit from a cheaper source like woot being careful to ensure they are the same exact model / packaging / barcode. Finally return the second unit at a local store along with your authentic receipt, preferably at a different outlet that won't recognize you.
Of course this amounts to retail theft by deception and carries similar penalties to shoplifting or writing bad checks. I know because I have prosecuted several cases for this, one of which was severe enough that the secret service was involved due to other factors. Also, be advised that some store systems may be smart enough to flag the item as returned on the first trip, then when the same receipt is used to make the second return their system will reject or decline the refund, or possibly prompt them to give you a gift card, or just have you arrested...
you are right best buy has a good system intact where i live. everything you buy at bestbuy, is loged by serial numbers. if the recipt does not match the serial number, 1. they will refuse it, and 2. they call the police and put your name in the computer. if you try to retun something that has a good serial number, but it
showes that it has not been sold off to jail you go for haveing stolen property on you. it pays just to pay up for the item you want. that is why sales go up.

shockthemonkey wrote:I gotta say, in theory these things are cool as hell... but i don't know what i would do with it! it's $800 for a machine that doesnt have a keyboard or mouse, has very short battery life, but is otherwise a full computer... that alone would drive me nuts, because the majority of what i do on PC's is typing, playing video games or watching videos... all of which would be hard to do and/or suck up the power.
ah well, maybe another life
also, did anyone else think this would go well with that battery pack sold during the wootoff?
Well, first of all, these things DO have both a keyboard (which slides down out of the unit) and a pointing device (called "TrackStik" which is likely the same as an IBM TrackPoint.) It even has mouse buttons and a thumbwheel. All of this information was listed in the specifications, right on the main page. It pays to open your eyes and actually read sometimes! Click on the image on the front page to see the expanded view, which shows the keyboard; the mouse buttons are on the left side and the TrackStik is that black dot off to the right.
Also, I don't know what this device is rated for power input, so I couldn't tell you if it'd work with those ZAP portable chargers.

Nope, you're not ignorant at all; in fact, I made the same observation and posted a comparison between the PMA430 and the OQO a couple of pages back! I was actually surprised that nobody else had written anything about it.

I checked out Salt Lake City on Google Maps and I'm not sure what you mean. Many of the roads are perpendicular, and the E-W ones are typically named "4th Street," "5th Street," etc., but the city is huge and there are many, many more roads. Why exactly don't you need GPS navigation there?

I recently bought one of these for my wife from the OQO website for Christmas. I paid $1500+. Luckily i was able to snatch one up here and still have time to return the first. Even with the restocking fee I have to pay OQO, I am still saving a bundle. Thanks Woot! Now where the heck is it?

10" huh? Try sneaking that into the movie theater in your pocket.
