Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, 1777: Starving, demoralized, and riddled with typhoid and dysentery, Washington’s troops are on the verge of mutiny when a shipment of small, powerful rare earth magnets arrives from Philadelphia. Wrote Private Abijah Tate in his diary: “Provisions Scarce and weather Poore, yet the Men are very much heartened to pass the Cold winter evenings playing with their Balls. Scarcely can a man Sleep for the steady Din of Balls clicking between Fingers.”
Fort Sumter, South Carolina, 1861: A Union sentry stood watch on the battlements of the fort, nervously kneading a handful of Buckyballs. Mistaking the pale, silvery glint of the so-called “white” Buckyballs in his hand for a pistol, Confederate soldiers opened fire on the fort, starting hostilities in the Civil War. Over 600,000 troops perished in the ensuing conflict.
Boston, Massachusetts, 1876: Alexander Graham Bell says “Mr. Watson, come here, I want to see you” into his new invention, the telephone. Watson hears the summons clearly through the receiver in another room and rushes to Bell’s side, where the inventor shows his assistant what he has made from his Red, White, and Blue Buckyballs. Bell is deflated when Watson can’t tell what the creation is supposed to be. “If you can’t recognize an obvious bust of President Ulysses S. Grant, maybe I need a new assistant,” the inventor huffs.
New York, New York, 1929: The New York Stock Exchange loses 13% of its value on “Black Monday”. A panicked public turns to President Herbert Hoover for leadership, but Hoover is too busy trying to get his Buckyballs back into the perfect cube they originally came in. “Damn, I almost had it,” Hoover tells Treasury Secretary Andrew Mellon. “So what’s going on, now?”
Palm Beach County, Florida, 2000: In what appears to be an electoral anomaly, several thousand votes are registered for Buckyballs in the presidential election, enough to tip the state’s popular vote (and hence the entire election) to Republican candidate George W. Bush. After his inauguration, Bush nominates Buckyballs to serve as his Secretary of Labor. “Why not? He’s already in every office in the country,” the President says. “Heckuva job, Bucky.”
