Yours Truly

I like watching documentaries about things that I’m interested in: me.

Hey Cheryl! It’s me, Tom! Hey, I was just calling because I had a great time at dinner on Tuesday, and I was wondering if you wanted to do something this weekend. Doesn’t have to be anything fancy. I mean, we could just order takeout and watch a movie at my place on my refurbished Philips 32” 720p LCD HDTV.

Yeah, I just got it. It’s great. Like, with its Digital Crystal Clear technology, it actually adjusts picture quality for optimal contrast, color, and sharpness levels. And the Incredible Surround. Wow! I mean, it’s like you’re totally immersed!

So what do you say? Saturday? My place? Dinner and a movie? We could watch whatever. I mean, I have a pretty expansive collection. Mostly documentaries. Mostly by me. Oh, you didn’t know that about me, that I’m a documentarian? I’m surprised I didn’t mention that on Tuesday. It’s usually one of the first things out of my mouth when I meet new people!

What are my films about? Just stuff going on in the world. Especially in the part of the world that I inhabit. For example, my first one, Ride Forever, was a pretty intimate depiction of the local skateboarding scene. And I’m talking really local. Like, it was mostly just me and my roommate, Mitch. Honestly, It’s not my proudest work. Don’t get me wrong; it seemed groundbreaking at the time. But now, it just feels a little silly and overly optimistic. In fact, I made my next film, After the Endless Ride, as a response to that optimism. In that one, we watch as the life of a young skateboarder, me, is turned upside down when he breaks his foot and is told by doctors that he can’t skate again. For at least a month and a half. Really dark, groundbreaking stuff.

But, I mean, if you’re not into skateboarding documentaries, I got others too. Breaking Bones, Breaking Ties is a groundbreaking meta-doc about an anonymous filmmaker – I blurred his face and pitch shifted his voice so you can’t tell who he is – whose girlfriend breaks up with him because he’s always “too busy making skateboarding documentaries.” And then, of course there’s Singled Out which follows the quirky life decisions of a recently-single video artist. It’s a bit more light-hearted than the others. But still groundbreaking.

Oh gosh, I’m sorry. I sure can just go on and on about my work. But anyway, how about Saturday? We don’t even have to watch a movie. After all, the Philips has PC input, so we could just check out some of the raw footage from my new project about a young renegade skater-turned-video-journalist getting back into the dating scene. I only started shooting Tuesday, but so far, so good!

Top Comments are discussion forum posts we have deemed worthy of your time. Listen, we get a lot of comments, and most of the time, it's pretty forgettable stuff; but sometimes you rise to the top like butterfat in milk. We don't recommend you base your self-worth on how often we feature your comments, but we don't expressly forbid it either.
