I’ll never forget the day Paw yanked the horses to a stop by a merry little creek and said “Here. Here’s a good, fine place to build an A/V receiver of our own. Here we’ll stay.” After 94 days bouncing across trackless meadows in our covered wagon, it was a blessed relief to finally stop. Turned out we were still only about 50 miles from St. Louis. We’d been going in circles the whole time, I suppose because Paw’s left leg was shorter than the right.
Maw wore doubts on her face. But soon as Paw busted the sod with his shovel and commenced to building our Pioneer A/V Receiver, she lightened. It became a festive scene: me and Willa excited, splashing in the creek bed, asking Paw question after question, and Ol’ Bill nipping at Paw’s heels all the while. Maw made like to shoo Ol’ Bill away, but Paw said to leave him be. “It ain’t the boy’s fault he’s tetched,” Paw laughed, “and he never bites so as to draw blood.”
It wasn’t a pretty thing like the A/V receivers we saw back in the big city, with 7.1 channel sound, 4 HDMI inputs, a front-panel USB port, and full support for 3D content, Bluetooth, and Sirius Satellite Radio. But we loved that little pile of sod our Paw had made for us. “Someday, girls,” he told us that night, lulling us to sleep by the campfire with gentle melodies from his tuba, “someday, you’ll be able to connect every entertainment component you can think of to this thing: Blu-ray players, cable TV, hi-fi stereo systems, game consoles, even your iPod. Imagine it, girls.”
We had no idea what he was talking about. All we knew was how good, how safe it felt next to that crackling fire, under twinkling stars, our brother howling at the rising moon. And so we fell into slumber, one by one, far from any noisy city streets, or shouting neighbors, or angry mobs like the ones who ran our Paw out of St. Louis for being a witch.
