Most state capitol buildings look like they were built with the same Neoclassical LEGO set as the U.S. Capitol. A white dome, some white columns, a flag on top, maybe some local flora on the lawn... ho-hum. But a select few take their own idiosyncratic path, from jazzing up the dome to departing from the whole pseudo-Acropolis trip altogether. As befits such a diverse nation, the designs on the 50 State Quarters varied wildly in quality. Some states commissioned graceful, meaningful images from talented artists. Some just popped in a royalty-free clip art CD, got bored after half an hour at Illustrator, and called it done. Aw, but ain't that America?
