A few years ago I learned that wooden cutting boards are naturally more resistant to bacteria than plastic (which IS permeable, by the way).
If this is still true, then hand washing a wooden board is safer than machine washing a plastic one (unless you have an autoclave!).
Like Lake Wobegon, but without the lake.
