Here's the TL;DR version:

May 10 at 3pm CT | Ray-Ban Chromance sunglasses | Prices start at $1   (This is just a test, so don't sue us please)

UPDATE 4:02pm: We've gone through all of the price levels. Thank you for playing along with us! We'll keep up the $99.99 glasses through the end of the day. We're also gonna get together and figure out ways to make this better for the next round. So please do chime in on the thread and let us know the good / bad / ugly of this experiment.

UPDATE 3:28pm: For anyone still in the vestibule of patience, it's probably not going to end well. We love you anyway and we're already taking notes on how to improve this madness for next time.

UPDATE 3:13pm: Site got a little squirrely but we're back up. We've got at least one confirmed order in the thread comments below. Next price level releases at 3:20pm CT.

UPDATE 3:02pm: We're live and we have way too much traffic! We can't even load the page on our side. DAAAAAANG. We hope some of you were able to get to them. Stay tuned for the next price to launch.
______

WTF (Woot's Totally Fun-Tastic) Pricing is a way for us to give you a chance at a ridiculous price on a specific deal without losing our shirts. It’s a simple as that. So here's how it works:

1. Go to this page. (Deal will appear "Sold Out" until #2 below).

2. At precisely 3pm CT on Thursday, May 10, we will launch the deal with a price of $1. Click on the deal, and try to get it. There are just a few at this price.

3. If you don’t get the deal for $1, then click back to the page and wait to refresh at the next launch time.

4. At precisely 3:10pm CT, we will launch the deal with a price of $20. Again, there are just a few at this price.

5. Repeat Step #3.

6. At precisely 3:20pm CT, we will launch the deal with a price of $50.

7. Repeat Step #3.

We think you get the idea. Every 10 minutes we will keep raising the price in increments, eventually landing on the final Woot price of $99.99 (which is still a great deal). So, if you don't wanna play, you can wait for about an hour and get the deal at $99.99, if it hasn't sold out yet. But if you're feeling lucky, have some time to kill, and like hitting F5, then let's do this. GOOD LUCK!

Also, let’s set some expectations:

This is a test, and it might be a little rough. We might break the site. We hope not. If we do, we're sorry.

WTF Pricing is for this one offer only. If it goes well, and you like messing around with us like this, we will bring it back again on another offer.

When you click on the offer, you might be ushered into Woot's Vestibule of Patience, the queue of customers who are trying to order. From there, you'll either be taken to the checkout page, or our servers will hiccup and kick you out to Woot's main page.

There are only a few quantities at each price point. Each level will sell out really quickly. Most likely you're not going to get one for $1. Or $20. BUT YOU NEVER KNOW.

You may get a message that your order has been denied or canceled. This just means that we ran out of inventory at that price before we could complete your order. Most likely this is going to happen, so just be ready for the disappointment.

And hey, if you're lucky enough to get the deal at one of the crazy-low prices, post about it in the thread below, so other Wooters don't think this is some bait and switch deal. We can say it's not, but the internet never believes anyone. Plus, the more you share about what you got, the better the chances are that this could become a regular thing. Help a Woot out, OK?

3:00 PM CT then 1:10 PM CT?

Is this time travel, waiting 22 hours, or a typo?

Yes, we've broken the secret of time travel. You'll need to travel back.

Or we'll fix the blog and it will happen every 10 minutes.

One of those is true.

This is a fun idea in theory, but yeah. With this much of a heads up, there's no way anyone will legitimately get this at $1.

The bots will eat this deal alive.

Anyone who really wants these, is going to end up paying $99.It might not be a bait and switch, but a clever way to cover a dishonest marketing plan.

Why is it dishonest? The $99 price is still a good deal and this whole price climb thing is clearly explained.

Yup. One of those "get caught up in the excitement and afraid to totally miss out impulse purchase inducing" strategies you might see at an estate auction or on a home shopping network.

That said, I'm going to attempt to beat the bots. I might score some brand name sun glasses to break or lose on vacation next month!

Not dishonest, but like a Black Friday sale of "65 Inch TV for $1.00!!!!" But the store only has 1 TV and it was probably hidden by someone who works there for a friend.

Would it be better to do a count down from $99 to $1 rather than a count up from $1 to $99?

Benefits:
+Item will eventually sell no matter what
+Item will likely sell for a higher median price
+No chance for Bots to profit

We definitely have several more than one at each price point but definitely not a ton, even at $99 'cause that is still a "Cut-Me-Own-Throat Dibbler" price (completely unredeemable cred points for whoever catches the reference).

I can also say that we *will* be trying some techniques to keep the bots at bay, but some of this "test" is learning how to make this more fair to regular humans without having to result to confusing captchas and other such stuff. So please give us your open and honest feedback afterwards (like you wouldn't anyway!). We want to do lots of fun things like this more often and the more fun we can make it for y'all, the more we can justify this to boss-person.

(Also, I told the boss directly he wasn't allowed to try and buy the sunglasses this morning. Then I hid all the pink paper in the printer room. TAKE THAT, BOSS-PERSON!).

Sure it's a good deal! Like the teaser email I received to open this site, that I have unsubscribed from. So instead of coming up with this scam, why don't you just put them at a sale price?

So what model/style of Ray-Ban Chromance sunglasses are we trying to score? Also, will we have a choice in color?

Your carefully worded reply speaks volumes, SEVERAL, TRYING. How about using phrases like, "First 10", or First 2"

I’d like to know the style and/ or choices before I attempt to snag one. Can we get a preview? If it’s not going to be anything I’d buy (like only the blue-lens style shown) then I won’t bother.

This would be the first time anyone accused me of carefully wording anything. I once got in trouble at work for referring to a VP as a janitor. True story.

"Trying" is appropriate - did you miss the "this is a test" part of the blog? This is ALL about trying something new to see if it works and if we can keep the bots at bay!

"Several" is also appropriate as I'm not allowed to give our numbers. I can tell you we have more than just a handful, but less than a bushel? What the heck is a bushel anyway? And handful is subjective too - how big are the hands? Ah, this is too hard. I'm going back to trying to work out how to stop the bots.

Yes, I'm aware of the monopoly on glasses. It's the reason I've been putting off getting new glasses for years since my insurance will only pay for part of the bill. I'm going to have go very low end just so I can see properly again.

That said, people are still willing to buy them at the inflated rates. I'm not (especially since I need prescription sunglasses), but other people are.

How Many Shitloads Are In A F*ckton? Google Has The Answer
Anna Walters, 1 year ago 0 2 min read 0
Ines Vuckovic/Dose
Because I need a precise unit of measure for how many tacos I ate last night.

When I was first learning units of measure in elementary school, our teacher had us build a measurement man out of construction paper. He looked something like this:

As I grew up, I often thought of measurement man when baking or grocery shopping for liquids. He did not come in handy, however, when I needed to figure out more…nuanced units. Like what does it mean when my friend says she has a “shitload of work to do”? And how does that compare to my sister’s “f*ckton of student loans”? Alas, my construction-paper pal had no answers for me.

So I turned to the internet, where a Reddit post on r/shittyaskscience offered this complete breakdown, from a delicate little buttload all the way to a big fat Beep-boop-bip-do-beepton:

buttload * 10 = 1 butt ton
butt ton * 10 = 1 assload
assload * 10 = 1 asston
asston * 10 = 1 shitload
shitload * 10 = 1 shitton
shitton * 10 = 1 f*ckload
f*ckload * 10 = 1 f*ckton

I know what you’re thinking: “This doesn’t make any sense to me! I’m from the UK!” Have no fear, commenter DiggSucksNow clarified for users of the metric system:

10 shitloads per metric f*ckton. In English measurements, it’s about 66/7 shitloads per f*ckton. Most people prefer to use metric.

If you’re not familiar with this conversion system, there’s no need to be embarrassed. Only teenage boys read reddit. Luckily, this very important info has been brought to the masses thanks to our old pal Google. If you search for “f*ckton” or “define f*ckton” in Google’s search bar, you’ll see something like this:

What if there were no hypothetical questions?

According to Urban dictionary, a sh#tload is more than an a$$load but less than a fu♡kton.

I'm guessing its a smidge over a sh#tton.

I beg to disagree.

The sale will start at the $1 price and then it will sell out when the available inventory is bought. That is, the sale will end.

10 minutes later, a second sale will start at the $20 price and then it will sell out when the available inventory is bought. That is, the sale will end.

There's no way for you to accidentally purchase at a different price.

Dang good point right there. I didn't realize people were apparently thinking otherwise. I couldn't figure out why some were getting angry over this whole thing but that would explain it, I think.
