Music Monday: Heartbreak Soul

by Scott Lydon

Happy Music Monday! The holiday season is now official over! Well, until October, at least. So let's purge those sad and lonely feelings from our hearts today so we can get on with enjoying the spring and summer. Scott's got five songs about heartbreak, just to wrap things up on V-Day.

Issac Hayes - Walk On By

What really makes this song is the slow, passionate build-up. It's like watching two people have a fight on the other side of a window. You can't hear what they're saying, but you know what's ending. By the time the lyrics start, you just wanna buy poor ol' Issac a beer.

More inside, right after the jump.

Walter Jackson - Not You

Walter Jackson's passionate voice and heartbroken timpani drums carry the quiet passion of someone who gave their everything and lost. Best of all, it's not as overplayed as Motown hits so you can hear it fresh each and every time. Good stuff, this.

The Chi-Lites - Have You Seen Her?

Any song with a spoken word part is already gonna win me over. You know it's a heartbreaking story when the lead singer has to take a few bars to lay down the groundwork for what they're about to sing. This Chi-Lites hit isn't about loss, it's about what it's like to be left behind. We can all identify with that, can't we?

Mayer Hawthorne - I Wish It Would Rain

Mayer's modern, and he's great fun to see live. This dramatic parking lot video from his label might not be keeping to vinyl best practices, but it certainly drives home the point of the song. Sometimes you just need to be sad in the rain.

Trey Songz - What's Best For You

Love is knowing when to let go, even when you don't want to let go. This Trey Songz song covers that space very well. It also moves into the vaguely co-dependent, so maybe don't go looking to Trey Songz for relationship advice. What's best for you is a licensed therapist to discuss your abandonment issues.
