Forum Changes: Why You (Probably Won't) Care

by Sam Kemmis

Notice anything different about us? Eh? Eh? No? You never notice when we make adjustments to the site. It's like you don't care!

All jocularity aside, the forums have undergone a change. Woot Plus Sales (the ones with lots of products that last more than one day) will now have a discussion thread for each product, rather than the entire sale.

The Good: Now you can ask questions about specific products (i.e. "Does this monitor support rainbows?") and all discussion will happen in one place.

The Bad: Sometimes it makes sense to talk about an entire sale, and now that's unpossible.

The Ugly: This page is now pretty dang crowded with threads. If you're looking for a specific discussion for a specific product, we strongly recommend getting there via the product detail page instead of wading through all those threads.

FAQ:

Will this apply retroactively to old product forum threads?
No, this will only apply to product threads moving forward. Previous discussions will remain exactly as they are.

Can I still get to the discussion for a product from my order email?
Yes, that will work the same way, it will just be the discussion for the particular product you bought, not the Woot-Plus sale it was in (if it's a Plus Sale that launched after the change).

Why is this happening?
One reason is because we found the discussion threads on the Woot Plus Sales confusing, as folks would ask "How much wattage does this widget require?" and we'd have no idea which widget in particular they were talking about. The other reason is that, if we want to show a product in more than one place at once, we want to have the discussion threads consistent between those two places.

This doesn't seem like a very big deal. Am I missing something?
Nope. This is a pretty small change when you think about the complexity and vastness of the known universe.
