Music Monday: Classic Dances

by Scott Lydon

Happy Music Monday! Throughout the history of rock, pop and etc. there have been an endless number of special dances. Today Scott's recapping just a few of them. Then you can add YOUR favorites as well. So come on, everybody! Let's dance!

The YMCA

This easy-to-learn dance mostly happens above the waist, which is probably why it caught on. Even if you're completely trashed, you can still raise your arms at the right time and get pretty close.

Four more dances coming up. Get with it.

The Gangnam Style

This particular dance was embraced by the Internet unlike any dance had ever been embraced before. And then they turned on it. Now Psy is in the American "Where Are They Now?" bin. But I hear he's still big in his homeland. And what more can anyone ask than that?

The Twist

You remember this one! Everyone remembers this one! I think it's the go-to dance for every family-friendly TV show and movie since Happy Days was on the air. Also, let's face it, the twist is very easy to do. It's just a twist.

The Stroll

In an era gone past, every song had to have a dance associated with it. That tradition has sort of continued in the club community, where new songs pop up regularly with associated dance steps. But I'm too old for the club, so I don't know any of those steps. That's why this Music Monday is full of classics like The Stroll. And, of course...

The Time Warp

The sign of a good parody is when people take it as seriously as the originals. This dance was an obvious joke, making fun of the dances of the era of bad sci-fi. But it's also a really catchy and well-written song you can't get out of your head! And maybe that's why it finds a new group of high school kids each and every year.

Throw up some of your favorite dance songs and help us all get down! Also we should just remind you: some images come from the corresponding Wikipedia page and are here under fair use. See you next week.
