Music Monday: Cold

by Scott Lydon

Happy Music Monday! Are you cold? Scott's cold. Scott's so cold he's writing a Music Monday about it. But you probably figured that part out already, didn't you? You're so smart.

Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Winterlong

Is Winterlong a proper name? Is winter-long an amount of time? No one can fully say, and possibly no one is supposed too. Maybe Our Hero was waiting on a hippie princess or maybe he spent the whole winter missing someone. Either way, the coldness of being alone is reflecting in this icy-sad song.

Put on your warmin' hat and get a hot drink, because there's four more after the jump. See you inside...

Janelle Monae - Cold War

The US/USSR battle has been a metaphor for any two-sided battle since, well, day one of the Cold War. Here Janelle Monae adds some heat to the chill of her lyrics. The whole plot to her ArchAndroid saga is a bit complex and not really relevant to the current topic (though its great!) so let me just sum up: cold can burn just like heat if you're not careful.

Kate Bush - James And The Cold Gun

The cold is also a great time to think about what you want to be reborn as when it gets warm. Did you choose the wrong path last year? Too many mistakes? Wanna shed a few pounds and a few people? Spend the winter reorienting and maybe you'll come out someone more positive. You don't need that cold gun! Go hang out with your real friends!

Bruce Springsteen - Tenth Avenue Freeze Out

Temperature extremes have always been scary. Check this out: "The heat is on when someone tries to freeze you out." Does that make sense? Not technically, but everybody knows exactly what those words mean. So it's not hard to understand what The Boss is talking about here. Cold often accompanies the word alone.

David Bowie - She Shook Me Cold

And, you know, some people like the cold! It doesn't always have a negative. It can be nice to spend a cold night with your peppers and milk. Hey, it was the 1970s, people. Things happened.
