Music Monday: RIP Chris Cornell

by Scott Lydon

Today Scott's paying tribute to Chris Cornell. There's not a whole lot else to say.

Soundgarden - Rusty Cage

I gotta be honest with you, I was not a Soundgarden fan. I don't say that to start a fight, I say that so you'll know I'm being honest when I say this: Chris Cornell had an amazing voice. As he moved from project to project, he kept pushing himself to do more, to find the next sound that would fit his voice. Even losers like me, who didn't care for Soundgarden, had no choice to say "except for that singer, though." Think of it as a reverse-Smiths, in a way.

More to come. Then it's your turn in the comments.

Temple Of The Dog - Hunger Strike

I was in a car with friends first time I heard Hunger Strike. I didn't know the name of the band, but it was clear who was singing. It's hard to not notice Chris Cornell when he really brings it in full. Not many singers can do what he did.

Audioslave - Cochise

Audioslave was much more to my tastes, although I possibly would have enjoyed it more had I been a high schooler when it came out. Even still, dare you to listen to this and not start nodding your head.

M.A.C.C. - Hey Baby

One of those C's is Chris Cornell. And this Hendrix cover (full of Seattlians) pretty much crushes everything else on the record.

Chris Cornell - Wave Goodbye

Fittingly enough, Chris Cornell was a friend and fan of Jeff Buckley. It really shows in this tribute song, which is not at all like the heavier things. If you ever thought Cornell was just a screamer, well, let this prove you wrong.
