Music Monday: Sports Songs

by Scott Lydon

Happy Music Monday! Some people love sports. Some people love sports so much, they write songs about sports! Scott’s gathered those songs here today for your amusement. Also we need 50 million dollars in public money to build a Music Monday stadium or we’re taking this post to Oklahoma.

Operator Please - Just A Song About Ping Pong

This is so catchy and simple that it’s hard to believe Malcolm McLaren wasn’t involved somehow. And don’t start looking for metaphor here. This is JUST a song about ping pong.

See you after the jump!

Lorde - Tennis Courts

On the other hand, this is a song just loaded with deeper meaning. But it’s clear that this tennis court is a symbol of upper class lifestyle, and it’s to be simultaneously longed for and feared. Pretty impressive for such a young songwriter. Also one of the few songs about tennis!

John Fogerty - Centerfield

Bay City Rollers or John Fogerty? It takes quite the expert to figure it out before the guitar comes in. This catchy song, of course, is a tribute to the great American sport: baseball! It is what it is.

Stompin’ Tom Connors - The Good Old Hockey Game

Leave it to a Canadian to score the greatest song about hockey. I’m not well versed in the folk scene of the North, but I can say that this song is wonderful! And it also fulfills our minimum Canadian content for the day. Well done, Stompin’ Tom.

Kurtis Blow - Basketball

You may remember this one from Fitness Week ever so long ago. But Kurtis Blow’s tribute to the grand game of basketball is no less wonderful today. This is what hip hop was born from, after all. And also possibly Space Jam.

Let us just remind you: some images come from the corresponding Wikipedia page and are here under fair use. See you next week.
