The United States of Songs: Wyoming

by Randall Cleveland

Wow, this project was harder than I thought it'd be to finish off. But here we are full circle, after a few missed weeks and over a year later, ending our run with the great state of Wyoming.

The state: Wyoming
The song: Song of Wyoming

Wyoming's known as The Equality State due to its pretty progressive civil rights record (they were into women's suffrage before it was cool), but it might as well be known as the wiiiiiiiide open state. Wyoming's the least populous state in the nation and the biggest city (Cheyenne) has just under 60,000 people. So if you like your neighbors remote, Wyoming's the place for you. And if you're the outdoorsy type, you're in luck. Yellowstone, Grand Teton, Fossil Butte, and Bighorn Canyon are just a few of the national parks, monuments, and treasures to find in the state.

And that's why we have to close out with John Denver. When you've got a state as pristine and full of natural beauty like Wyoming, you need a song that appreciates that sort of thing. Wyoming's on my list of places to visit (every state is, but Wyoming's near the top of the list) because of Yellowstone especially. What do you call a Wyoming native? A Wyoman? A Wyomite? A Wyomino? I don't really know.

Wyoming, I like your song, and I think it's a fitting tribute to close out our run. Let us know what else there is to do in your fine state!
