Seattle, WA

Manager, Software Development
(Woot LLC, Seattle, WA)

Woot! is the original daily deals website and continues its longstanding tradition of having people who are far smarter than us say "hey that shouldn't work, what on earth are you doing?" If you're still reading, hopefully it is because you are as ridiculous as we are and want to help us bring people amazing deals on products at prices that perplex them in a positive way. We are looking for a creative and clever Software Development Manager to help us use all those fancy buzzwords that hopefully will be picked up by a job description SEO bot like Machine Learning, Data Mining, Artificial Intelligence, and other fancy tools that AWS just shipped. You'll stick all these tools in a blender to predict the awesomeness of deals at high scale so we can only put the mostly absolutely amazing crap up on the site. You'll build relationships across Amazon and external vendors to find what makes a deal great, and seek out what influences people to want to buy our crap. There's a lot of data out there, and you will work with product managers, research scientists, and your software team to make sense of it all. Does that sound like fun to you?

If you're an experienced Software Development Manager bored of the norm who loves building stuff, getting into the details, and doesn't mind a work environment with a dose of silliness, we'd love to chat with you. It'll be fun, it'll be an adventure, and you'll be able to get a lot of stuff done fairly fast. You should be great at writing and verbal communications, and willing to challenge assumptions and ask tough questions.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead a team of 7-8 software development engineers delivering Woot's Treasure and Catalog software (lovingly known as SCARE for reasons you'll have to apply to find out).

  • Work with Product Managers, Vendor Managers, Research Scientists, Data Engineers, and a host of teams inside Amazon to learn, get access to troves of data, and deliver automation, tooling, and applications of those ever useful ML models.

  • Own the long term roadmap of a set of mission critical services that need to work at high scale. Seriously. When we joke about servers melting when we list of Bag of Crap, we are only being partially hyperbolic.

  • All those classic manager things like hiring, growing people in their careers, promoting them, making them waffles, and so on.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in mathematics, computer science, or related field.

  • 5+ years of relevant engineering experience

  • 2+ years of experience managing a software development team, and a proven track record of shipping software on time

  • Experience with C# .NET, Java, C++, or similar languages and frameworks

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A strong track record of project delivery for large, cross-functional, projects
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present complex technical information in a clear and concise manner to a variety of audiences
  • Experience building distributed, cloud-based, or serverless applications.
  • Experience with machine learning, artificial intelligence, or process automation.
