Congo Mapendo

Congo Mapundo Next
South Kivu, Democratic Republic of Congo
Flavors of Red Currant, Cashaca, Myrtleberry

  • Process – Washed
  • Varietal – SL34
  • Altitude – 1600-1950 masl
  • Harvest – Sept 2022

Mapendo Next is a project of Mighty Peace Coffee a pretty new coffee trader based out of the Congo that is looking to make a big impact in the lives of Congolese coffee farmers. While it’s no secret that the DRC has experienced more than its fair share of trouble, what might not be well known is that the region nestled alongside lake Kivu is grows some of the tastiest coffees in all of Africa. Blessed with fertile rich soil, high elevation and prime coffee climate, the province of South Kivu has been delivering coffees that are hands down as delicious as any coffee being grown in the DRC’s more well known neighbors like Kenya, Rwanda, or Uganda.

When Mighty Peace approached us to see if we would be interested in coffee from the Congo, we were hesitant at first. Of course, we love to feature coffees that are off the beaten path and from up and coming producing regions, but as a small roaster we have to offer high quality coffee- it’s the only way for a roaster our size to compete with the big boys. Jim, one of Mighty Peace’s founders, assured us we would be stoked with his beans and so we cupped them blind against samples from Rwanda and Kenya. Well, imagine our surprise when all of the highest scoring cups on the evaluation table came from the DRC by way of Mighty Peace. What a revelation. We tasted coffees that sparkled with crisp acidity and stonefruit we would normally associate with Kenya, but had wonderful body and sweetness. Very structured and balanced. Just the way we like it.

This first lot from Mighty Peace, Mapendo Next, is from a cooperative of smallholder farmers, about 40% of which are women. The Cooperative currently has 3 washing stations, and is hoping to invest in a 4th. Supporting quality farmers by buying their wonderful coffees is a no-brainer and helps farmers continue to invest in their farms and families.

Papua New Guinea | Baroida Estate
Description: Tastes like: apricot, brown sugar, baking spices.

Baroida Estate is possibly the oldest coffee estate in the Eastern Highlands of Papua New Guinea.

Purchased in1963 by Kiwi immigrant Ben Colbran, initially Baroida produced mostly quick cash crops like strawberries, cabbage, and broccoli. However, by ‘65 Ben had realized his dream of growing coffee and quickly established himself as a pioneer of quality coffee in the Eastern Highlands. Eventually, Ben would sell the farm in 1979 and relocate to Australia, however his son Nichol decided to stick around and manage operations for the new owners. Eventually, in 1997, Nichol bought the farm back and continues to run the operation today, turning out world class coffee with a complex and bright flavor that is not often found in PNG. This particular coffee has a wonderfully earthy but sweet green tea flavor, reminiscent of a nice clean genmaicha, deep stone fruit sweetness, a juicy mouthfeel, and a lingering aftertaste of baking spices like allspice and mace. It’s pretty dang good tbh fam.

  • Process – Washed
  • Varietal(s) – Arusha, Bourbon, Mundo Novo, Typica
  • Altitude – 1700 to 1850 masl
  • Harvest – September 2022

Approach – My approach to all Indonesian coffees is the same. I want to find a balance between sugary sweet roasty flavors, and the bright, spicy, earthy, complexities of the coffee’s terroir and varietal. With this delicious PNG, finding that balance is easy. We roast this coffee pretty light, showcasing a delightful stone fruit acidity, but we still manage to bring out a nice spice and chocolate finish that creates a very sweet, bright, and round cup. Baroida always produces coffees that are super complex and tasty, so as a roaster my goal is to just be nice and gentle, letting the work of the producers stand for itself.

Costa Rica | Laderas del Aguacate
Description: Tastes like: clover, honey, peach tea.

Costa Rica Laderas del Aguacate
Tarrazu, Costa Rica

This amazingly sweet and clean natural comes to us from farmer Tito Monge who together with his dad run the “D’Nincho” wet mill and several farms in the San Pablo de Leon Cortez region of Tarrazu. Tito’s father, Elandio “Nincho” Monge, bought land in the late 70’s and has worked in coffee his entire life.

Cristian “Tito” Monge Vargas comes from a family that, like so many others, used to drop off their coffee cherries to a Cooperative, CoopeTarrazu. In the late 90s Tito took note of a new style of production by another producing family in the area, Los Vargas, of processing your own crop. As someone passionate about nature, farming, and coffee he came to the realization that processing the harvest on your own can make a huge impact on your production. He was really attracted to improving quality, connecting to the final consumer, and also getting a better profit for his work. In order to reach his new dream, he worked 12 years for ICE, the communications department of the government, while he was studying industrial engineering, banking and financing, and project administration.

In 2008 Tito acquired part of this farm and he named it Laderas del Aguacate and in 2017 Tito’s sisters acquired the other part, that is called La Bendita. This is a 3 hectares lot located at an altitude of 1600 masl, the name literally translates to slopes of avocado. It is called this because when Tito’s father first started working the land and planting coffee there; he and his workers would take refuge under the avocado trees during their breaks. This lot belongs entirely to Tito and he credits its quality due to its shade trees.
