This Pyle unit is easy to install
By Russell on Reviewed in the United States on May 13, 2015
I have a 2008 Grand Caravan with the overhead console that doesn't have the DVD package. The factory DVD option can be installed for around $800 to $1000. My only regret with this DVD player is that I could have ordered a larger one, and the FM modulator is weak. If you have a similar Caravan/Town Country with a DVD-less overhead console, this Pyle unit is easy to install. 1. Remove the front cap that has the dome light. It has four snap clips. Just start at the rear and pull down. Disconnect the light and put the panel aside. 2. Remove the swing down door. You will have to squeeze and bend a little to get it out. It will come out, just keep working on it. 3. Using a properly cut piece of 2x4 and wood screws that are 2" long, drill four holes bigger than the screw shank. Screw the 2x4 into the now doorless hole. This unit is very light. 4. Take the metal mounting bracket and some more wood screws. Shim between the wood and bracket if needed. I needed about 11/16" worth of spacer. Try to get the metal bracket centered and flush with the console. 5. Wiring.....my advise is do NOT tap into the big connector you see up there. It is for the dome lights which are LED, and computer controlled. The one place I found 12 volts actually drops to 7 volts when the key is off. Plus these lights are controlled by more than just a door switch. Using these wires caused the DVD unit to flicker when it was off and act funny. The sound through the FM modulator was also terrible. I ended up using some twisted shielded pair I had laying around, and fishtaped the wire through the headliner. I ran it to the front and hid it in the headliner. Then I ran it down along the door hidden in the pillar, and then under the dash. The wire is easy to push under the weatherseal. From here there are wires under the dash that would probably work, but to speed up the install I ran through the firewall to the relay box. I didn't feel like Scotch-Locking anymore wires. The wire used in this particular vehicles is thin and fragile. I didn't hook up anything other than the red and black power wires. I stowed the other connectors and dome light wiring because I just need the DVD player only. The overhead console has plenty of lights. Anyway, the DVD player works great, and I am happy with it so far. We drove down a bumpy road and it didn't skip. Sound quality is good with the FM modulator. -UPDATE- It's winter of 2016. I give this 5 stars now! This DVD player is still going strong. We love it, and it stayed on continuously for a four day cross country trip. Also, we bought some IR headphones for $10/each on Amazon. The FM modulator is okay, but the IR headphones rock. The kids can put them on and not complain about low volume, plus I don't have to listen to kid's movies for hours on end. The IR sensor needs a direct line-of-sight to the headphones. Also, there is IR A and IR B. Make sure you use the right one. On IR B the headphones wouldn't work, but on IR A they work great. The overhead bins provide headphone storage. I thought about installing a second unit because I like this one so much.

2nd x I purchased this item. 1st one was very good, 2nd one is awful.

2nd review: Although my 1st purchase of this item was a very good experience, the 2nd has been anything but. The unit mysteriously doesn't play most DVD's (original manufacture DVD's, etc) and it emits a constant whine on the audio that is very annoying. The audio buzz was an issue on the 1st unit, but not objectionable, but on this unit it's very annoying. My primary reason for 1 star is that the DVD player just doesn't work -- can't read most DVD's. I would not recommend this product. 1st review: We've had this item for 18 months -- and we absolutely love it. I installed it myself (it was a little bit of a headache), but the DVD player has functioned flawlessly. It was worth every penny and I'm happy to say that it is chugging along just fine (you have to wonder when it's this cheap). Just a few notes: 1. I would only recommend this item if you're going to run sound through your car's speakers. Don't expect the internal speaker to do the job, it won't. 2. When the unit is closed, the speakers reside just above the closed screen (the speakers sit behind a series of slits in the plastic). There's some type of adhesive/glue that is subject to becoming gooey when it's very, VERY hot (encountered this issue during summer in Alabama). That goo will drip down through the slits, onto the screen, and you have to remove it with Goo - Gone or other type of solvent. This only happened a few times, but it did occur. No damage to screen, etc. (it kind of plugged up the speaker holes, but we're running audio through our van's head unit, so not an issue. 3. Sound is a bit quiet (we have to crank the sound on our car's head unit to hear DVDs...this can be an unpleasant thing if you forget to turn it down before turning the stereo to a different sound source). 4. LED lights stopped working after 3-4 months. It's not perfect. But it was dirt cheap and it is running strong after 18months. If you can't deal with the stuff I mentioned above, you need to spend an extra $500 (or whatever amount) for a name brand player.
