Exact replacement for Braun 360 Complete shavers

I see bad reviews about this replacement foil here on Amazon and almost decided against buying it. The problem appears to be that this is actually the replacement foil and cutter block for the Braun 360 complete series shavers, specifically the 89** series. This series along with the Braun Activator has now been discontinued. I have the Braun 360 Complete 8985 shaver. If someone can recall the Braun 360 was a minor upgrade to the Braun Activator line of shavers. The upgrade was in the foil and the cutter block assembly only. According to Braun, the newer cutter block and foil were better at cutting than the previous Activator series cutter block. Also the newer cutter block fit both Braun 360 complete as well as Braun Activator shavers. Braun has now discontinued the individual cutter blocks for these shavers and now they offer only the Braun Series 5 Combi 51S for both shavers. So, here's the deal: >>If you are looking for an exact replacement for the Braun 360 Complete line of shavers, then this Braun Series 5 Combi 51S is the right product for you. It is identical to the one you previously had except that 360 complete is not written on it. >>If you are looking for an exact replacement for the Braun Activator line of shavers then this is NOT the replacement for you. This will fit your shaver but it is a different product. You will be better served by getting the Braun Series 3 Combi 30B. Now for the quality of this cutter block and foil. It cuts like the original. Since I never had another shaver or another cutter block, so I cannot compare it to another. My original foil that came with the shaver got chipped within 4 months. I was quite upset but went ahead and bought another one, the replacement lasted for almost 3 years. So, now I have bought this one, let's hope this lasts for 3 years too. I have been using it for a month. This is made in Germany. If I skip shaving one day then on the next shave this cutter block will occasionally pull some hair, but if I shave everyday then the shave is pain free and close. I will update this review if this foil fails before time. - Update 29 February 2012 Please see my post in the "comments" for an update on this review. Thanks. - Update April 7, 2013 I just wanted to let everyone know that since I wrote my review, Braun has updated both the 51S and the 30B foils. The new 51S foil has a very different foil pattern and the embossed blue center power comb has been changed to a flat silver colored power comb. I have never used the new 51S, so I do not know how it cuts or whether it still pulls hair or not. If you read the "comments to my review" section, you will know that I have long since switched to the 30B foil and cutter block for my 8985 shaver, with good results. However, be advised that Braun has also changed the 30B foil and the newer one has a different cutter block. I have not used this new 30B, so I cannot say anything about it either. Reviewers, who are deciding to buy the 51S, or comparing 51S and 30B foils, should consult the more recent reviews, as those will pertain to the newer foils.

Not as good as the old cutter

I too was surprised when I replaced my original cutter/foil set with these. They didn't cut well, and they tugged on my stubble. Not at all the clean, fast shave I got with my original blades. That's why I switched to Braun from Norelco. There may be some good news here though--a review by S. Bergeron for the Braun refurbished 8985 shaver that uses these blades said that the Braun 30b cutter/foil set is a better replacement. Here's what he had to say about it: "(...The new replacement blades are the) 'gillette' blade cutter block, which is not nearly as effective as the older style Braun cutter blocks (the gillette type has wide blades with narrower gaps between them, leading to skipped hairs and requiring multiple passes). I ordered a 30B cutting block and foil (for the series 7000 synchro models), which has the older, skinny blades design and bingo! it transformed the 8985 into the most efficient shaver i've ever used (or tried). With the fast oscilations of this model, there is no tugging and i get a shave closer than a wet blade in very little time. NOTE: i've noticed that the current cutter blocks and foil (like the 51S) listed by Braun for the 8000 series have the more agressive 'comb' between the foils (blue in color). This comb design scrapes the skin more intensely (it is thicker, wider and protrudes more), which left me with a red face after shaving (from irritation). The 7000 series (30B) cutter/foil is more recessed and glides better on my skin without irritating it and while giving me a faster, closer shave..."
