LOVING it so far
By BatikFreak on Reviewed in the United States on April 21, 2017
I've only been drinking Visalus for 6 days but so far I am beyond excited. I am using these as a meal replacement for 2 meals a day since I am trying to lose weight. After 5 days I have lost 7.5 lbs with no change to my normal exercise routine. I do walk 4.25 miles most mornings and walk an additional 3.75 miles in the afternoon 4 times per week. I can't possible imagine being able to lose that much weight every week but it's a GREAT start. For healthy snacks I've been eating a piece of fruit (banana, apple, etc.). I did do some trial and error to determine what worked for me from a taste perspective and have provided details below. Overall details: -These fill me up at 2 scoops per shake - If sufficiently mixed in a blender or with a shaker bottle I do not think these are grainy at all and I'm pretty picky from a texture standpoint Note: I have determined that the shaker bottle works great and no longer bother with the overhead of using a blender -To me there is a slight aftertaste but I just follow each shake with a chaser of 12oz of water -The first few days I was physically EXHAUSTED - even going to bed earlier. I think my body has now adjusted and I seem to be at normal energy levels again. -The first few days I did have a persistent headache. Again, I think this was my body adjusting to the lower calories. What didn't work for me: -Shake mixed in blender with water and no additional flavorings. YUCK! -Shake mixed in blender with skim milk and no additional flavorings. YUCK!!! What worked for me: -Shake mixed in blender (or shaker bottle) with 1 cup skim milk (80 calories) and 2 tbsp sugar free pudding mix - YUM! -Shake mixed in blender (or shaker bottle) with 1 cup unsweetened blend of coconut milk and almond milk (35 calories) and 2 tbsp sugar free pudding mix - YUM! If you mix everything together in the morning and let it sit until the afternoon it's almost a pudding consistency which you can eat with a spoon or somewhat drink as a beverage (it's thick). I find it equally as good to just mix together and drink right away. Since I am using sugar free pudding mix in my shakes I can easily switch up the flavors so it doesn't get boring: Chocolate, butterscotch, pistachio, banana cream, etc. Next I plan on trying to mix in fruit and ice instead of pudding mix to add additional variety. I doubt I would do this during the week due to convenience but it might be a nice change on the weekends. I am also not sure that "just" fruit will mask the taste of the base shake flavor enough for me to like it. UPDATE: I have been drinking Visalus as meal replacement for 2 meals a day for 5 weeks and have lost 17.8 lbs so far. I take Saturdays off from calorie scrutinization and pretty much allow myself to eat whatever on that one day. This gives me a way to "reward" myself for a good week, provides a mental break and IMO informs my body "hey, don't worry - we are not starving"

Created issues for me...
By Dean C. on Reviewed in the United States on August 15, 2012
First the good. Visalus shakes taste great and if you use it as they suggest there is a decent chance you will lose weight. My wife has lost over 10 lbs in 10 weeks and I lost 8 pounds in about 2 weeks when I was using it. Now the bad... at least for me. I noticed that I was getting headaches, joint pain, swollen glands and was very moody. I had not tied the symptoms to the shakes I was making. While researching I came across an article from a nutritionist that said she never recommends soy based proteins to men - she only recommends whey based proteins. I did not have all the symptoms she said that soy causes but I had most. So I immediately stopped drinking the shakes and after a few days all the symptoms were gone. However, this created a problem that needed to be solved. There is no doubt that the Visalus shakes were helping me cut weight and I definantly wanted to keep loosing weight. So I decided to build my own shake. Based on information I read in the article I decided to put together my own shake that would do the same thing the Visalus was doing. I read the nutrient part of the Visalus packaging and using that as a guide I came up with the following: I use the "About Time Whey Protein Isolate" as the base - I get the cake flavored one. I put 2/3 of a scoop of protein into 12 ounces of almond milk (sometimes juice), then add one TBS of "Now Foods Psyllium Husk Powder" (the fiber), and usually 1/2 to 1 cup of frozen fruit(s) and blend it. I replace two meals per day with these shakes - I usually do one for breakfast and one for dinner. I keep each shake under a total of 45 carbs. I also take two "Now Foods Liquid Multi Gel Vitamins" with the morning shake. After 8 weeks I have lost 22 pounds. Sometimes I have peanut butter added as well and even have added other nuts on occasion. Adding spices like cinnamon and other flavors like baking cocoa are a good idea too. All the ingredients, except the frozen fruit, are available on Amazon. I can tell you that the Visalus taste better, but only slightly so. I don't dread these shakes and they do not leave a bad after taste and are not chalky at all. Normally I am looking forward to them at meal time. My shakes have more protein, more fiber, and when combined with the vitamins I am getting more nutrients than the Visalus. The cost per shake is slightly higher than Visalus but not enough that I care. And best of all - none of the symptoms have returned. So, my recommendation is this, if you experience any symptoms I mentioned while doing the Visalus shakes try creating your own. You don't have to use my recipe - I am sure there are other good whey proteins, other good fiber sources and other good vitamins.
