The Best sub-$100 workout bluetooth headphones!!
By M2wo on Reviewed in the United States on October 27, 2013
If you are thinking - A. I go to the gym and love my music. But my earphones keep falling off. The wires keep getting entangled. I have lost a couple of headphones to sweat. B. I like to walk and jog and love my music. I commute a lot and love my music. Wires get in the way amidst the subway rush. C. I have tried bluetooth headphones before but the sound quality is not great. My biggest problem is skipping of tracks. I put my phone in my front pocket or backpack and the music skips and stutters! I put my body in between the headphone and the phone (swinging hands while walking, holding the phone in my hands) and the tracks skip! More than the passable music quality, my biggest gripe is undependable bluetooth reception. Then you need Motorola S11 Flex HD!! I am no sound snob and I don't look for high end speakers and headphones that cost many hundred dollars. I like my music to be clear, crisp, loud and the bass to be heavy - the way the artist intended it to be. While the Apple Earbuds (the new ones) beautifully worked for me - it kept slipping out of my ears in the gym and the wires would constantly tangle and irritate. Now I bought a XXXX-XXXX brand bluetooth headphones that cost me $135 - and it promised latest bluetooth 4.0 technology and tons of other features like noise cancellation, digital signal processing, etc. And they made pretty good BT mini speakers - so I thought, why not? While the sound quality was great - booming bass, clear, loud sound, the bluetooth reception was terrible. The phone touched my body (jeans pocket, jacket inner pocket) and the songs would skip!! Returned it promptly and got a refund. I was hesitant in buying the Flex HD cos of the "cracking neckband" issue noted by many Amazon reviewers - but I nevertheless decided to go for it. And Boy! Am I glad I did!! The range is almost 25 feet, practically skip free music reception and the sound is great and clear! The various earplugs helped me get the one that fit snugly in my ears. It charges super quick and very easy to sync and use. I can carry the phone in my pockets (front or back) in my backpack or fanny pack - no issues! Works beautifully. Some reviewers have said making phone calls is not great - but I never felt that. It is clear and LOUD! Even the other person could hear me great. And what about the neckband breaking, you say? Well, to be fair, it IS a plastic/rubber flexible neckband and will break if not stored properly or if stretched too much. But I have been using it for over 2-3 weeks now did not feel it was delicate or breakable at all. Follow these tips- 1. If you plan to carry them in your gym bag or backpack - you need a hard case. If you load books or anything on top these headphones, these will break. I use a tin of M&M candy to carry them in and it fits just great!! :-) Otterbox has a case just for them as well. 2. Remember this is a neckband not a HEADband. So don't try to wear them over your head/ forehead. Slip them on from the back of your neck. That way, these will not need to stretch that much and you should be fine. I am 6 feet, 225 pounds and wear XXL shirts. And these fit me just fine! 3. Don't be in a hurry to fit them into your ears as you wear them. Take the 30 seconds needed to position them correctly and patiently and you are good. These will not budge during your entire run or workout. Summary - For its Sub-$100 price, these are great quality, well built BT headphones with integrated iPhone controls. Made by Motorola - people who have been making high end tech for a long time. These sound great and most importantly - the Bluetooth reception is great. Great for workouts as they stay in place and sweat proof as well. I would be hard pressed to find a package like this at this price!

READ WARRANTY UPDATE BELOW. I am using these primarily for running. I have been using these for approximately two weeks now. They are comfortable and stay in place. I have always had trouble with the in ear style of headphones using the ear-buds. My ears must be an unusual shape as I have not had luck with any in-ear products. These have several ways of adjusting but I was still having a poor fit. I looked all over the internet to see if there were different types or sizes for this than the 4 sizes included. I came across a web site that had instructions for using a rubbery product sold on Amazon called Sugru. You simply fold back the end of the buds roll a small piece of this play dough type of product around the bud. Place it in your ear to set the mold. Let it sit overnight and then use. It takes the shape of your ear and stays in that shape while remaining rubbery and flexible. Now I have perfect custom designed ear buds. You can easily search the net and you tube for the step by step instructions. When the unit powers on a voice tells you the expected battery life which is a nice feature. A full charge is over 5 hours of use. I wish they could go a little louder but I expect they are plenty loud for most users. I made some tone changes on my iphone which helped. Comfort and looks I give it 5 starts. Sound and loudness it gets 4 stars. UPDATE 3/2015 After 10 months of using these (1-3 times per week on average for running) they stopped working. I plugged them in to charge and noticed the charging light did not come on. I checked on them the next day and they were dead. No light no power. When I plugged them into charge they still had some life left. I tried several chargers but could not get them to turn on again. Luckily these come with a 1 Year warranty. Lucky me! I called Motorola and they walked me through a reset by pressing the power button and the other button on the bottom at the same time for several seconds. This did nothing but apparently is a reset for some who may need that. The bad news was that the S11 Flex was discontinued. The agreed to send me a new pair of S11 headphones as that is all they currently manufacture. Just no more flex models. Even the S11 were on backorder. After a couple of week waiting they sent an e-mail asking if I would accept a color other than black as those were still on back order. I went with another color and they shipped it out. So far the S11 appear to be almost the same as the Flex. Had to wait but they did finally send the new ones and honored the warranty.
