I am a believer... TiVo sets the standard
By Mr_Shush on Reviewed in the United States on January 19, 2014
I have always been a cable guy. I have been a Charter, Comcast, and most recently Time Warner customer. For the past two years I gave Direct TV a shot. Though impressed with the quality of the service, I just couldn't help feeling I was paying too much for what I actually use. When my two year agreement was up I dropped the service vowing I was going to cut the cord. I wouldn't actually say I cut the cord. More like I cut the crap. I live in Arcadia CA. Not more than 5 miles from all transmitters. I put a Clearstream HD antenna on my roof and was 90% happy with the reception. Because I live at the foot of the mountain, I am unable to receive the CBS broadcast signal. All others are perfect, and in fact more crisp and clear than anything I got from satellite or cable. As much as I tried to convince myself I could, I just could not live without CBS. Being a Time Warner Internet subscriber I was always able to pull broadcast and any unscrambled signals through my cable connection. It was all part of my internet plan. However, to get your TiVo to pull the signals you need a cable card, and of course, a TV plan. Because I subscribed to the Extreme package for internet, Time Warner offered me the cable card and their "Starter TV" package for only $10 more per month. The cable card activation process is not a simple task. My guess is that is intentional. However, I was finally able to get it working and am really happy with the cost and the picture. Now for the TiVo. Setup is a breeze. The remote is fantastic and the unit itself is very sleek. I love this thing. At first I set it up with the HD antenna. Crystal clear and perfect with the exception of CBS. Setup via the cable card was a bit of a struggle but Time Warner was helpful and we eventually got it done. I get all the channels I would want and more. Not as many as if I pull in true OTA via the HD antenna but everything I need. The TiVo iPad app is amazing as well. Total control of your TV viewing and DVR. There is some confusion regarding a "tuning adapter" for Time Warner customers. With the Roamio, I do not need a tuning adapter to pick up the channels in the starter TV package (which is basically any channel you can get OTA). I have the cable card installed and activated and the TiVo is plugged right into the coax jack in the wall. I may need a tuning adapter if I upgrade the package to pick up other channels. If that happens I will edit this review. I recorded my first show last night, Saturday Night Live. Totally happy. I never really paid attention to people that spoke so wonderfully about TiVo. I always thought, how good could it be compared to the equipment from the providers. Well, I am now a believer. This machine is sweet. And the best part is, I own it. The subscription is well worth the service. By dropping satellite, adding a TiVo, Apple TV, Netflix, and other streaming video choices, I have cut my cable bill by $1,200 per year. I actually feel I have more options now than I ever did with cable or satellite. I highly recommend evaluating your TV viewing services. Educate yourself and make the change. You will get more of what you actually want and you will pay less. One last comment on the TiVo as a streaming device. Not the best use of the machine. Access to Netflix and MLB is cool but I will continue to use my Apple TV for that. There is access to Amazon but it is not your Prime account. I suppose that is the way you access pay on-demand services. The Apple TV or the Roku 3 are much better options as a streamer. Go for it. The investment will pay for itself.

Update. April 12, 2014. 4 months after purchase. I have unplugged the TIVO, will pay the monthly fees for the next 8 months. At least I'll save the $ 3 month cable card fees. I got another tuner. The tuner works. I have 2 TIVOs and the new tuner works in the old TIVO, but not the new Roamio. It is a Roamio problem. I now only get 4 standard def stations with the Roamio. TIVO offered to replace the Roamio for a flat $ 49, plus shipping. I figure the total cost will be $ 75. I'm sure I will get a refurbished TIVO. Decided it wasn't worth spending $ 75 to get a refurbished TIVO, which may or may not work. Since my ROKU 3 gives me Time Warner Demand channels, it is much less compelling to have a TIVO. I'll keep the TIVO Premiere connected as it has a lifetime and is trouble free, The Time Warner demand capability of the ROKU 3 is a major threat to TIVO's existence. I did purchase the TIVO on Amazon with the AMEX credit card which doubles the warranty. I called AMEX. Was told it would not cover the cost of the replacement ($ 49). Only would cover the labor cost, since parts were still under the TIVO warranty (90 days labor, 1 year parts). Since labor isn't separately charged, I'm not covered. Think that stinks. Update. 105 days later. Well warranty is up by 15 days. TIVO doesn't recognize tuning adapter. My old premiere works perfectly. Time Warner spent 2 hours at my home today, swapped out cable cards and tried 3 different tuning adapters. It's a TIVO issue. I bypassed tuning adapter for a direct hookup. Gives me half the channels. When my one year committment is up, I'll scrap it. Only saving grace. When I called to cancel my 13 month old Premier XL, they offered me a lifetime for $ 199. I took it. Do not recommend it Roamio. I was one of the original TIVO users. A 45 hour standard definition TIVO. Very disappointed. Original review. Integrated Wi Fi. It's about time. This is my 4th TIVO. Currently paying for 2 monthly subscriptions. Have been satisfied with all my TIVOs. Getting rid of the $ 90 Wi Fi accessory is a big plus. Our other TIVO is a 2 tuner Premiere XL that holds 300 hours of HD. We've never had it over 25% , so 75 hours is enough for us. Our other TIVO has been moved to the bedroom. We really needed at least a 4 tuner set. Two tuners may seem enough, but the stations are now playing it cute by ending programs at 9:01 instead of 9. This causes a conflict and forces you to cancel a show, or not watch a live station at the same time. It effectively reduces the two tuner to a one tuner. Before your TIVO arrives, go to your cable source (if you use cable), and get the appropriate cable card for a 4 tuner set, and tuning adapter. TW charges me $ 2.80 each for the cards. One for each TV. You need to call your cable company to activate and pair your cable card. TW has a great system, and it took only minutes to do. You also need to have an HDMI cable on hand, and a USB to HDMI cable. The kind that connects from your wired printer to your computer. I also pay monthly, not lifetime. On my original TIVO, an old 45 hour SD job, I took a $ 199 lifetime plan after 2 months. Three weeks later, a nearby lightning strike wiped out the modem on my TIVO, and my computer. Yes, I did have surge protectors, as well as a $ 300 whole house surge protector sold and installed by my electric company. End of my TIVO, end of my $ 199 lifetime plan. TIVO offered no sympathy. So TIVO yes. Lifetime plan NO. You cannot stream to your mobile devices with the 4 tuner TIVO, without adding accessories. Added. You also need a short coaxial cable. My prior TIVO packages included every possible cable you may need. No longer. The power supply, remote, remote batteries, and the TIVO were all that were included. An added explanation on the usb needed. The standard side of the USB connection connects to the TIVO. The printer type side connects to the tuning adapter. I went to my junk box, and pulled an old printer cable out. It's not the older type with the large ends. It is a very small odd sided type that plugs in. The cable company should be providing these. Ask them for one.
