FANTASTIC performance and value!
By wgzn on Reviewed in the United States on June 19, 2024
(i'm not paid or in any way compensated for this review) We've been using the Black+Decker 40v MAX tools for about 12 years now. I LOVE THEM! One of my favorite purchases ever. They are in my experience, the absolute best yard tools available from a price / performance / convenience perspective. I will admit this is now our third string trimmer, But i ABUSE the heck out of these things! I drop them, toss them, leave them out overnight (rarely, but it happens), and put them to tasks they were never meant to handle. So when you consider that's 6 years of use each, that's a pretty sweet deal. So let's say this trimmer / blower / battery / charger package is $225. That's less than $100 per tool, divided by 6 years. That's less than $20 per year cost of ownership. That's an AMAZING value. These things are BEASTS! In fact our original (12 years) blower is still working mostly fine. I just chose the dual package here now because of the value. The first time out with this new string trimmer today, i did about 80 feet of fence line (see my before and after pics) with about 12" tall weeds, full of woody tree (mostly ligustrum) starts and briars on just one and about 20% of a second battery. We keep about 6 batteries in cycle on our 6-acre, semi-rural property. We've also had their 40v MAX chain saw for about 7 years. It's still going strong. And we just recently got the 40v MAX hedge trimmer, which my wife loves. About the only even semi-complaint i have, And it's not really even a "complaint," as it's an expected thing. is the batteries have about a 2-3 year usable lifespan. So, factor that into the cost of ownership. That could be from $40-$200 or so depending on how many you buy and whether you go with "official" or knockoffs. We keep about 6 batteries in rotation, and haven't noticed much difference between the $40 knock offs and the $90 official B+D batteries. Overall, this is a superb product line, and i couldn't imagine maintaining our property here without them!

Bad battery = worthless tools
By Amazon Customer on Reviewed in the United States on November 2, 2014
We've bought a lot of Black & Decker tools over the years including cordless drills, trimmers, and blowers and were generally happy with them. Unfortunately most of them were destroyed in a house fire so we bought this combo to replace the trimmer and blower. It arrived promptly, we unpacked it and tried to charge the 40v battery...immediately the red light started flashing. I looked this up in the manual and it said this indicated a bad battery or bad connection. I tried three different outlets and made sure the battery was fully in the charger....same results. I called Black & Decker customer service, they asked where it was purchased, model #, etc. and said they would send me another battery 'as a one time courtesy', telling me it would arrive in 10 days to two weeks. Two weeks came and went with no battery so I called them back and the rep said sorry, they were out of batteries and had no idea when they would have any. I told her the other person I talked to said he was shipping me one and she said he must not have known they were out. I had heard the 36v battery would also work in these tools so I asked if they could send one of those but she said 'they're the same battery and we don't have any'. So it's been almost a month now and I have these worthless tools sitting around with no way to operate them until B&D restocks their supply. I can't believe a company like this would come out with a line of tools and not have a clue that just maybe they would need a sufficient supply of batteries too? They wouldn't admit it but I'm guessing that they had a huge run of faulty batteries and are trying to play catch up. She did say that they had a lot of unhappy customers right now. My fear is when I do eventually get a replacement,(I'm calling every week), it might be bad too. I don't know who's in charge of this company now but I do know I'll be looking elsewhere for the rest of my tools.
