Upgrading from HD70
By Tampico on Reviewed in the United States on April 30, 2015
My previous projector was an HD70 which I liked because of its color reproduction, low image noise and reduced rainbow effect due to its RGBRGB color wheel. I just got the HD161X projector in April 2015 and it is fantastic. It has everything that I liked from the HD70 with some notable improvements. Brightness: The amount of light is perfect for a dark room on a 92" screen and can handle without problems moderate lighting as well even in Eco mode. In this regard HD161X is better than the HD70. Latency: There are some YouTube videos that show a noticeable lag in the image. I was concerned this would show up even when watching movies (e.g. lips out of sync to the words being heard), however I couldn't notice any effect whatsoever in that regard. Also fast action video games (e.g. Titanfall) play as well as with the HD70. I haven't compared the projector vs some other display like they did in the YouTube videos, but if there is any lag is not noticeable to me, so same as the HD70. Color: The color reproduction is very good. The projector has advanced color controls if you want to do professional calibration (e.g. with a colorimeter/spectrometer). I did such calibration on my HD70 and got very good results, with the HD161X is even better. Image quality: The image is very crisp and clear, haven't noticed any noise. The difference between 1080p vs the 720p of the HD70 is very noticeable on a 92" screen. Color wheel: I chose this projector because it has a RGBRGB color wheel compared to other projectors that have clear segments and other secondary colors to boost the lumens. The RGBRGB color wheel effectively reduces the rainbow effect to be almost invisible to me. Same as HD70. In summary this is a very good projector. I am satisfied with the purchase. I recommend reading the in-depth review online at projectorreviews for calibration guidance.

Rethink
By António L. on Reviewed in the United States on December 29, 2017
I bought my optoma HD161X projector in 10.12.2014, at the end of 3 year of normal particular use, it simply just died. I live in Portugal, so I go to the official site of Optoma, contact the official help and have had sent my projector to maintenance. I've received my estimate price of repair yesterday, and I'm lost for words.. It's more than half of the total cost of the projector. Apparently the mother board died, and they even got the model wrong!! Tried to contact maintenance, so that a can ask how is that even possible, the price and the wrong model, but no one answer the phone. So, my advice to someone o want to buy this, just rethink, or get a extended warranty. I'm a long time costumer of Optoma, before this projector I had other one that had work without a problem of 10 years, now I'm thinking of getting a TV. Really disappointing.
