Great combo - JBL SUB 550PCH & NHT speakers!
By J. R. Tow on Reviewed in the United States on March 4, 2015
For years I denied the need for a powered subwoofer in 'my' stereo or HT application, both eventually having there now 20+ yr old Polk Monitors aided with three 12" passive subs. Then - my son bought me a Sony 10" powered sub (SA-W2500) for my HT - wow - maybe I need a 'real' sub? A couple of years ago in my upstairs LR of my old framed abode, I could shake things off wall mounted shelves with my Polk PSW-505. Moving to our present 'garden' home with carpeted floors on concrete was quite an improvement - and the great room used more of the Polk's abilities - with nothing falling off a shelf! One night - a week ago - I heard a slight rattle from the subwoofer. Fearing the worst, I started looking for a replacement. I got a pair of NHT SuperOne 2.1's for Christmas for my office stereo - WOW! They are an acoustic suspension design - a favorite of mine from many years ago (1968!). Their bass is great - what there is of it - but it's delightful 'thump' fades below 100Hz - I had wanted the NHT 8" sub to 'help' them - now I had an excuse to 'try' one. I found the $600 JBL SUB 550P in black - all JBL now offers. It was more than the smaller NHT sub - but 'more' of a sub. I also noticed one in cherry - for $290! It could be gecko green with purple polkadots and I wouldn't care. I ordered it Monday - it arrived today (Wed AM!) - apparently from WOOT & Amazon. Of course, I found the rattle/buzz source on the Polk sub - an empty CD jewel case rested on it - so I didn't need the sub... but there it was - in front of the door this AM. Not fun to move - it comes in a big box - and it's heavy. 'Open other end' on the box top had me turn it over and open the bottom. The instruction manual was under the packing at what would have been the top of the box. Confusing. So is the need for the spikes on a carpeted floor. The clearance was 1/16" greater with the rubber feet, remember my short pile carpet & pad are on a concrete slab, so I went back with them. That - and picking the heavy little beast up to move it - were the most stressful points of contention - I was listening to it within minutes. And - what a treat! My first reaction was that tired TV phrase I hear on DIY channels... "Now that's what I am talking about!". Seriously - great bass extension - with no more BR port 'chuffing' - or 'hangover' - just deep bass thuds! I really like it - and it stays in my office, too. My office is ~11ft square, with, from L to R, a corner display case, a small vertical display case, my desk, a gap, and a bookcase to the other corner. My speakers are on foam pads canted slightly in and down so that their dome tweeters are aimed at ears, the left one atop the short corner display cabinet and the right on a same height bookcase shelf. Both are fed with 10ft lengths of #14 100% copper zipcord from my 50 Wpc Onkyo TX-8020 receiver fed by a C-7030 CD player. I had no choice - the new JBL sub was placed to the right of the desk and about a foot in front of the bookcase. I played my venerable copy of Paul Simon's 'Graceland' - love the percussion and fretless bass on several selections, which I had never heard with that much bass extension except over my old Koss Pro-4AA headphones. I also watched several episodes of 'Longmire: Season 3' on BR - great help there, too. My system is pretty minimalist by most standards - but this sub and the NHT speakers really combine well - I'm glad I bought both - they certainly have found a home here. I may watch a movie or two and see how that sub fares in less musical applications.

Dont' buy this product!!
By Bill M. on Reviewed in the United States on June 3, 2015
JUNK! I bought this 3 months ago, and this morning it simply stopped working. Calling JBL, they pushed me off onto a service center 2500 miles from my home. Since it is significantly heavy, there's no practical way to ship it back to them, so I'll likely eat the cost. This will be the last JBL product I ever buy; that after 30+ years of enjoying there various speaker products.
