Orange Fire 8" HD features external SDHC storage slot
By Moccasin on Reviewed in the United States on November 28, 2015
I forget how long I've owned this particular FIRE HD, but seems like it was in the summertime it arrived. I have two FIRE HDs larger than this, and they both have 64g storage. This HD 8 only has 16g storage. I got it in ORANGE, so I could find it easier. The bright color is a nice touch. Oh, about the storage. For the first time, Amazon included a SDHC card slot for adding external storage to some of the FIRES, including this one. Therefore, I am not sacrificing storage capacity by accepting a mere 16g of internal storage. I added a 128g SDHC to the slot. Naturally, some things are not transferable to the SDHC card, but I'm not concerned with space-hogging memory-hogging games or social apps or email and such as that. I'm not even concerned with storing photos on this device--although it does have a front and back facing camera feature. I have other Kindle FIREs that I use to watch movies or Prime Videos, or music. I play a couple of games on here--Solitaire, Freecell, Mahjong Prime--and it is light weight enough that my wrist does not tire when I play them to relax before I go to sleep at night. This is a great general purpose FIRE HD, I'd call it a basic model in a small format, Extremely affordable and a good choice if you are not sure how much you or someone on your gift list will use it. Or if you wish to take really casual photos, even short videos. It is designed to be linked to your Amazon account, of course, which means your book/video/music purchases are always available for download even if you are not a Prime Member. Whether there is storage (on Amazon) for free of photos taken with this device, without Prime Membership, I cannot say. There are so many new developments in the Kindle devices that it is hard to stay abreast of things. There is a smaller Kindle FIRE HD available, but it does not feature external storage via SDHC slot. I also have one of those, and at $99 i(the price I paid anyway) t is a real bargain if cost is the major consideration. Personally, I enjoy the 8" HD ...after several months of service, even drops off my lap when I fall asleep, it keeps on working. It connects flawlessly via WiFi, and when I turn on Bluetooth it pairs quickly. I can carry it in my purse easily. UPDATE Apr 9, 2016 Two things must be changed. First of all, it stopped connecting to WiFi. It sees the network, but cannot authenticate the connection. So far I have not solved that problem Secondly, the SDHC card which I so anticipated as a way to extend storage, is a big disappointment. I got the 128gig card expecting to load up my reading and Audible titles on the card. Well, It is for music and movies, and some apps/games IF the app allows it to be stored on the card. There is NO PROVISION for loading e-books or Audible books on the card. What a bummer. Keeping those two items in mind, I'm reducing my STARs from 5 to 3. I mean, my books are a BIG DEAL! UPDATE APRIL 14, 2016 Amazon customer service emailed me a few days after I posted the above UPDATE. Seems there was an update to the op system and of course it could not get it w/o wifi. They sent a link to the update. I downloaded it on another device, and tried to install it, but the FIRE did not show up as a drive on my computer when I connected it. Next day I called back, and a different techie helped me. We went through every step again, this time removing the stored network information and re-entering the information. Well, THAT did the trick! So immediately while it was working, I downloaded the update which installed itself properly. Problem solved. In the updated op system the ability to store my audiobooks on the SDHC card works beautifully. With my 128 gig external storage card, I was able to put most of my Audible collection on the one card, and still have 55gig or more left over for other apps. Not many of those in my case. Nor do I download music or movies. I have a Prime membership, but choose to stream movies or TV shows. Since I have other devices, I also do not read/write email, so did not activate that feature. This Tangerine FIRE HD 8" 5th generation is strictly a device I use for Audible books, since the main system holds only 12gig. I kept my two favorite bedtime/sleepytime games, Solitaire and Mahjong, but got rid of everything I did not need. The question whether the 5th generation FIRE HD connects to FIRE TV, I really do not know. I disconnected the FIRE TV from our only TV set. Then I got a 2016 Sony BD player and hooked it up to the HDMI cable of my TV. It has Amazon among its many sources of movies, and other media. More than I will ever use.

Good, Bad, Ugly, and what's this? an attitude adjustment?
By Francine M. Broughton on Reviewed in the United States on December 24, 2015
I had intended to buy a Fire HDX 7 32GB model from the Amazon clearance department. There were several left at about $150, but the next day they all were gone! I checked eBay, and you guessed it, several brand new Fire HDX 7 32 GB selling for $200 each. (commence weeping & gnashing of teeth!) Being a fan of Kindle & Audible books, I needed more onboard memory. My Kindle HD 6 purchased new in Dec 14 has been great (still is) , but I just wanted more memory for music and the aforementioned Kindle & Audible books. So, fast forward, I purchased this all new, Fire HD 8. THE GOOD: 16 GB onboard storage and an SD Card slot (finally! yeah Amazon!). Now I can have several Audible books withouth having to delete apps. Nice screen and the sound is noticeably fuller than last year's Fire HD 6. THE BAD: Slow. I' mean, I could drive from here to Toledo & back in the time that it (sometimes) takes to populate the Homepage with app icons. Sometimes it's fine but other times its 10-12 seconds! Now as for battery power... this thing definitely eats power, and yes, running the same apps as my older Kindle. What's going on here? THE UGLY: Every time I watch a video embedded in a webpage (such as Destinos: An Introduction to Spanish) the video freezes about 6 minutes into the video. I switch to "Clean Master" app to free up some RAM, and whoopee! I get to watch another 5-6 minutes of video before it freezes again. Never had this problem with the older Kindle Fire. This has happened everyday in the week that I've had the Fire HD 8, so I'm pretty sure it isn't just a fluke. All other computer & internet dependent devices have been turned off & it still freezes. So, I decided to send this Kindle Fire HD 8 back. I printed the UPS shipping label and everything last night. Then today, turned it on and it demurely informed me that it was installing an update. Yeah, right, I thought. It's a little late for apologies buddy. Being the ever optimistic person that I am, I tried playing Destinos videos, and voila! no more freezing. Not sure what to attribute this change in behavior from my tablet to. Did it receive an attitude adjustment from Amazon? Is it responding to the unseasonably warm weather we're experiencing? I don't know..... I'm giving it a stay of execution, for now anyway. If I decide to send it back, I'll update this review. Otherwise, I can handle a bit of slowness in exchange for the storage on this tablet. On day 1 I would have given it 5 stars, yesterday it would have received a 0. That averages out to 2.5 stars, but I have to round it off. Being the ever optimistic sort, I will give it 3 stars.
