Top positive review
Great consistency

Initially wasn’t a fan of the texture but over time really come to appreciate it. It’s easy to mold and shape your hair, and doesn’t look greasy whatsoever. Hair also doesn’t feel sticky or too hard

New formulation as of Oct 2018 is very different than the old Natural Matte cream, and has some cons
By John on Reviewed in the United States on October 7, 2018
I've been buying Layrite for years, so I am quite familiar with their various products. When the Natural Matte came out a couple years back or so, I began purchasing it depending upon the look I was going for. Over the last year or so, I've opted for less of the heavy pomade/grease look and more of a matte look (but something that would still let me comb into place like a pomade). The Layrite natural matte cream was a pretty good product for shorter-to-medium-length hair; I had some issues with it not being as pliable later on in the day, and leaving traces of white residue after trying to comb once the product had hardened, but overall it was pretty good for what it was. I have also been buying Reuzel's pomades for the last couple years (I alternate between those and Layrite), and I noticed upon my most recent purchase of Layrite's Natural Matte that the consistency of the product had drastically changed and now resembles Reuzel's own natural matte product. It used to feel much more like a cream and dissolve between my palms in a dry consistency, but now, it is much stickier and when I try to rub it between my palms or fingers it just feels gummy and doesn't dissolve as easily. At first I thought maybe I was imagining it, but sure enough, after putting it in my hair, it has a very different effect than the old Natural Matte product did. It now gives it much more of a pomade look (even in dry hair); I've found that it takes a heavier concentration of product to keep the hair in place, and by applying more, it inevitably ends up giving it more of a greasy look than the old natural matte product. Even the distinct vanilla scent is not as strong as it used to be. Overall, it appears that for whatever reason, Layrite may have decided to change its product to market it more closely to the effects of Reuzel's matte pomade (I'm NOT accusing them of trying to copy a competitor, but I've been using both brands for so long that it was hard for me to ignore the fact that it felt and looked a lot like Reuzel); but I miss the old formulation, which provided a better "dry" matte look. I wouldn't say it's a BAD product, but I loved the old Natural Matte for its unique qualities and style, and this new formulation doesn't give the same dry matte appearance that it used to. I've been using it for a few days now, and even in completely dry hair, once I start combing it, it just begins to look wet and more like a pomade.
