Great tablet. Kid friendly.

We purchased 2 of these tablets for our children (3 & 6) after having Nabi Dreamtabs and not being very pleased with them. We had been told by numerous friends that the Fire HD kids tablets were a very good buy for them, so we decided to give them a try. BATTERY: The battery seems to last quite a while. My kids tend to watch shows on their tablet and leave them on and wonder off. Even having something playing non-stop like that, their battery tends to last until the evening, whereas the Dreamtab used to be dead by lunch. It's nice having a charging cord that is considered common as well. Again, I'm only comparing this to the Nabi Dreamtab because that's the only other kid tablet we've owned. The Nabi had a unique cord that I had to special order every time it broke. And believe me, it did often. The placement for the charging port was in the worst location. The kids would set their tablet down on the cord, bending the crap out of it. It would short out/break after a couple months. O/S: The O/S, referred to as FreeTime, isn't bad. I don't like it as much as I did the Nabi because I had more control with the Nabi, but it's ok. You can sign on to the parent profile and it's just like a normal tablet. There is NO Google Play Store, is this is a Kindle, so they operate on the Amazon Store. However, if you really like the Google Play Store, you are able to put it on the tablet by simply Googling it. You just need to install 4 apk files using an SD card and a file manager program. And you are able to install apps on the child profile using the Google Play Store as well. You just need to buy a cheap program called GoToApp which will allow you to add apps. You install the 4 apk files on the child profile and then you can add the Google Play Store to the child profile. Then it's as simple as installing the apps there and adding them through the GoToApp app. However, the Kindle App Store has about 90% of most applications that the Google Play Store has. However, there are some apps that I was unable to find for my child on the Kindle. Plus, I did notice that certain apps are outdated on the Kindle App Store as compared to the Google Play Store. For instance, Angry Birds Go was a much newer version on the Google Play Store then what it was when I looked for it on the Kindle App Store. Amazon FreeTime: This is the software designed to monitor what your kids can/can't do on their tablet. It's not bad. Seems to be a little "buggy". So you are able to install apps from the adult profile and then you can add content to the child's profile. This allows you to control what they can access. However, I have installed apps on the adult profile but can't get them to show up in the add content area to add it to my child's profile. If I restarted the tablet, most of the time it would show up, but not 100% of the time. Seems to be a little buggy in that area. The child's profile doesn't have any kind of browser or anything so that's good to really control what your child can/can't do or access. If you want them to have one, you'll have to install an app from the Amazon App Store and add the content to the child's profile. I feel that there is a gray area in this software though. There are 4 tabs in the child profile. Home, Video, Books, & Apps. Your child can access any of those tabs and it will show them a bunch of those specific items that are age appropriate based on the age range you select when you set up your child's profile. All they have to do from that point is simply tap on that app and it will automatically start to download and install it on your child's profile, to which they can play that app on the Home tab. While this isn't necessarily a concern as all the items that I've seen in those tabs were certainly age appropriate, however I feel it gives them a little more free reign on the tablet. With limited space, I'd rather my child not be able to install a bunch of apps and completely fill up the free space on the tablet. That's just my preference though. All in all, I'd recommend this table to anyone.

Such a disappointment

We have the Kindle 4 and the Kindle 6 and the Kindle 7. They really went Above and Beyond on the Kindle 8. I'm so in love with it. I'm thinking about just keeping it for myself instead of letting my son play with it LOL. I'm so glad they finally fixed the whole speaker issue and have it coming out the top instead of the back. I love all the apps that you can do and the option for the parent control. I just wish that on the parental control they can still watch their videos without needing the password. Update 8-1-2018 6 weeks ago my son was playing on his Kindle and ran the battery down. Unbeknownst to me once this happens the item does a reset and you have to hold down the power button after it is fully charged for 45 seconds. I contacted customer care. Two days ago my son did it again and so I charged it but it never came on after i held it down for 45 seconds. I contacted customer care and let them know the issue and what I needed to do. Apparently a lot of Kindles have this issue where they will just stop working and you have to send them in. I had Amazon pick up my packages before when I had a refund or return an item. But for this one they Claim that they weren't able to. All I have is a mobile phone so I end up going to our library to print off the UPS slip. I ended up taking the package to the UPS drop box in the town next to us. I now have to wait for them to receive the item and ship out a new one. I'm a bit disappointed because I'm going to have to upload all of his movies, games, and shows. Fortunately any and all pictures that I took I moved the SD card that I had bought. DO NOT LET YOUR KIDS RUN DOWN THE BATTERY!! Update 10-4-2018 When I got the replacement it had a scratch, but when I put the screen protector over it you couldn't see it. Two weeks later it turned from a scratch to a crack. I had to send it in for a replacement. I will say that it was super easy getting replacement, but it took a good two weeks to get here. now we are on our third and it has taken over 8 hours to download all of his movies, apps, and app extra downloads. If you decide to get a Kindle I would highly recommend getting the extra 2 year warranty. My son is not rough on these. He only plays them when he has done his school work or on the weekend. He does not throw the Kindle or drop it. I would just make sure if you decide to get any Kindle you get the extended warranty! Update 12-01-2018 On November 12th our kindle stopped working again. It kept going to amazon setup/reset. Contacted them again. Send it in and waited for replacement. Nothing. So I contacted them on the 23 or so and was told it was on its way. Contacted them today and was told it's out of stock. The only way to get one would be to repurchase this item and wait for a refund once it was shipped out. That wasn't going to work. 2 hours later, 3 agents, and 1 supervisor I was told the best they could do is a $50 refund. So we had the item for less then 8 months and had to send in for 4 replacements and all I get it $50 back. Do Not Buy A Device From Here! All the devices I received were refurbished or had refurbished parts. I was always that kind of person that didn't think I'd get a lemon from Amazon, but I was so wrong. The customer care refused to help in any way and kept transferring me. The supervisor just kept giving me the run around. Horrible all the way around
