Misophonia Relief!!! Don’t waste your time with others!
By Shauna C on Reviewed in the United States on March 9, 2023
I recently have been having a horrible time with Misophonia! Like having to walk away during dinner due to sounds and realizing I am having trouble concentrating at work from all the random sounds like ac/ computer fan/ background conversations etc. So I went down a search for some possible solutions. I did not want big noise cancelling head seat but also do not want my ears to be in pain always. There were lots of suggestions so I decided to purchase several for a side my side comparison. 1. Flare- honestly I am not sure what to think I though half of them were missing. Think the caps of earbuds (like the extra ones the include for different sizes). I have a strong feeling the design over time would help reduce the sound but I am thinking more of you just need a little help. 2. Loop (experience): the loop design is supposed to mimic your ear canal bug also help with sound blocking. They did block the sound but a little too much. I tried them a few times thinking they would be good but they caused my interns sounds such as heart beat and movements in my mouth to be extremely amplified! If hearing those do not trigger you they are a good option but for me too big of an issue. 3. Silicon noise canceling ear plugs from A brand on Amazon with very high reviews. I am not sure if I got a knock off or if not what I am looking for but while not bad not worth the price for me since I don’t need just regular earplugs. I will say though that they did irritate my ears a bit. 4. The last purchase and the one I am keeping is of course these. I originally was not looking at these but on a forum someone mentioned looking into ear plugs for musicians so I did and found some suggestions towards this brand. I honestly thought I would like these the least with the multiple step down plug design but as designed they feel fabulous in my ears. Comfortable but secure. Also the non “shell” part Aka the blue part of mine truely is a filter of sound. I can still hear people talk and sounds but it really calms the outside world. I can tell it is not a gimmick but actual science and engineering. I will admit I was a little afraid they would get stuck in my ears but after I got more comfortable I find myself seeing how helpful they are to me I more and more daily situations. And while I can feel they are there the are so very comfortable! This was the most expensive of the ones I bought but worth every penny. I do not know about actual dB blockage but they filter out life the perfect amount for me! (Oh and I cannot hear my heartbeat with them in). So yeah the world is just a little bit easier with these in my life and I am thankful for that! Now off to buy at least 1 more pair so I can have them easily available! (Even though I will say the carrying case is great with its hook) I just want one for my work bag, one for my purse, and maybe one just for home!

Marginally better than foam plugs
By Preston on Reviewed in the United States on March 1, 2016
These earplugs protect your hearing, which I suppose is priority number one, and they do that well. However, I'm not convinced that I would prefer these earplugs to foam plugs. I'm writing this review mostly because I think the huge amount of 5-star reviews on this product are misleading. This product is not perfect. I have two problems with these earplugs that are making me look elsewhere. There is a natural resonance in the ear canal that happens between 2-4 kHz, which helps contribute to richness in sound. The idea of music plugs is that they maintain the natural resonance of the ear canal while attenuating (decreasing) the loudness. In other words, a they should provide a 'flat' attenuation. My wife is an audiologist and using the equipment she has available at her office has confirmed that these plugs do not maintain as good of a flat attenuation as quality music plugs should. (Keeping in mind these tests were performed on her ears, and the results of these tests are dependent on the shape of your ear canal and the fit of the plugs in your ear canal.) The attached image shows two waveforms: The upper line is test #1 which displays the amount of sound that reached her ear drum WITHOUT the ear plugs, and the lower line is test #2 which displays the dB level that reached her eardrums while wearing the plugs. Secondly, I don't really enjoy the sound quality that comes through these plugs. I have a set of professional grades headphones that I've tested these plugs with, and if I wear the headphones and earplugs at the same time, my working theory is that higher volumes with the plugs should sound the same as lower volumes while not wearing the plugs. This is not the case unfortunately. Part of this is likely due to the lack of flat filtering offered by these plugs. Listening to music at high volumes while wearing these plugs sounds semi-washed-out and exhibits an occluded- i.e. the 'oil-drum' sound. For my upcoming Coachella experience I will be searching for another set of high-fidelity plugs. Maybe the quality I'm expecting is impossible to obtain with a 20dB drop, but I'm not yet ready to give up my search.
