Good performance, surprised to find temp sensor
By dxmnkd316 on Reviewed in the United States on October 19, 2022
I've had this installed in the garage for a month now. Works great. Surprisingly sensitive and fairly good range and breadth for motion detection window. The installation was a little wonky. I installed it on an outer corner and I really wasn't a fan of the way the screw was held in place by the plastic mount. I was surprised to have it show up in HomeKit with a temperature sensor and numeric light level sensor. Pretty slick. Could easily use it to determine if I left the garage door open. Update - 1-2-23: Still going strong! Will be adding some smart automation in HomeKit using this sensor soon. I can report that it has survived temps that got to nearly zero (even in the garage! It was a pretty cold stretch) for a couple days. I haven't tried putting another sensor next to it to see how close the temps are to each other, but given that it follows the daily temperature swings for the area, I suspect it's at least qualitatively accurate. Update - 5/9/25: Still on the original batteries when I installed this back in Oct 2023. I wanted to update to add a few things: 1. I had bought a second one that ended up falling into a flower bed (don't ask). It stayed there for a solid week through the rain and muck. I cleaned it off and it still works great. Was very surprised given these probably aren't listed for that kind of environment. Very impressed. 2. I have integrated the first one to Home Assistant via Hue and it works great. No issues. The second I purchased I integrated directly with ZHA. There are a few additional options available that way. But nothing worth the hassle of managing two separate methods of connecting to HASS. 3. The temperature sensor seems to be as accurate and responsive as other temperature sensors I use. This is surprising because usually with embedded sensors they tend to run a bit hot since they're often enclosed with the microcontroller. Not the case here. 4. I'm finding the illuminance sensor is very useful for various automations beyond the sunrise/sunset in Home Assistant. 5. The motion sensor itself is _extraordinarily_ sensitive at its maximum setting. This is handy for what I was using the second for. 6. The back can be mounted almost anywhere if you use some hook & loop command strips. They won't last more than a year or so outside in Minnesota, but this can be useful. 7. The one complaint I have is that when motion is detected and it doesn't have a solid zigbee connection, the entire white portion flashes fairly bright red. It is NOT configurable which is very disappointing. Would be nice to have this as a "diagnostic mode" toggle.

Long time Hue user, disappointed by experience trying to setup this sensor
By Kevin Mitchell on Reviewed in the United States on December 2, 2022
I have a die-hard Hue fan for many years - probably around 6 or 7 years now. Almost every light in my house is a Hue bulb, and basically everything is controlled by a Hue switch or motion sensor. For these reasons, I was particularly bummed out to have the experience I did with this particular sensor. In short, going through the initial setup process resulted in the sensor being added to my Hue hub but in a bugged, incomplete state. As I type this, I've boxed the sensor up for return but am unable to remove the broken / unusable sensor from my Hub configuration within the accessories list in the Hue app. Specifically when I added the sensor through the Hue app the app "hung" while it was attempting to connect with the sensor. I waited for 5-10 minutes, no luck. When I went back to the list of accessories I was surprised to see that the outdoor sensor actually WAS added (even though the setup never completed), but had a "Not configured in this app" label / tag / message. From this point, I tried nearly everything I could to resolve this. Had HomeKit or Eve somehow magically taken over control of the device when I was adding it (no)? Did reseting the device (long press setup button) resolve things? Re-adding the device? No, no. I ended up talking with Hue support on the phone for 40 minutes (no resolution, though nice guy!). In the end, I turned to both reddit and Hue support on Facebook, both which advised me that if I had over 12 accessories (I had 15 at the time) then that was likely the issue. So that is where I am now - only through my research (NOT through any warning or messaging in the app while trying to add the sensor!!!) am I able to ASSUME that the strange / broken experience is PROBABLY because of a soft accessory limit of 12 that I've passed. To be clear, if the limit is 12 and the Hue app prevented me attempting to add this sensor I'd be disappointed but wouldn't have written this review. The 1/5 stars is because I now have a sensor added to that app that I can't remove (because attempting to access the device results in "Loading..." showing, but the sensor config options never load so I'm unable to remove it!), and does not work, without any messaging or guidance. I could go down the path of adding a second Hue hub, but that comes with an entirely new set of ill-defined trade-offs / cliffs to fall off of. As much as it pains me, I'm using this opportunity to explore a Thread bulb and Thread motion sensor to see if this is a new direction I should take with my smart home until this device / accessory limit handling is improved by Hue.
