The world used to be hard. Nomadic warriors used the glowing heads of freshly-slain dragons as shelves. Then all the dragons were gone, and they turned to the stacked bodies of the giant god-wolves. Then they kinda finished off the god-wolves and had to turn to the ship-size shelf eels. You can probably see where this is going, can't you?
Eventually the warriors worked their way down the list until they got to carving shelves from cliff-sized diamonds, which looks fantastic but is kinda heavy if you need to move. So the warriors stopped being nomadic and started growing plants by pulling stones out of the ground and making fields. After a while they did research and discovered the stones could be melted down into steel, which they could turn into shelves that were almost as good as dragon-heads and god-wolf eyes. And that's where we are now.
Basically, if you don't like these shelves, blame the warriors of olde. You gotta respect the breeding season or you won't have anything to hunt next year, ya know?
