“He’s a lightweight,” they say, disparaging a political candidate for a perceived lack of in-depth knowledge about relevant issues.
“You’re a lightweight,” they teased, as you vomited your first-through-eighth tastes of tequila into the brush heap behind the frat house.
Hey, maybe those jerks should ask the cave troll from the Mines of Moria about how heavy is always better than light. Oh, wait, they can’t, because itty-bitty, nimble-footed Legolas killed that sucker dead! (Another reason they can’t is because cave trolls are fictional. But we stand by our point.)
If we had our way, everyone who uses “lightweight” as a term of derision would have to answer to Roberto Duran. Look at it like this: If you had to carry a canoe on a long portage, what type of canoe would you prefer? Here’s a hint: It rhymes with “bite plate.”
So, admittedly, the Asus Eee PC 900 Netbook isn’t the machine on which you’re gonna create your feature-length computer-animated film. But here’s a little secret about the system that is: You can’t stash it in the side pocket of your cargo shorts after an afternoon of lakeside computing on it.
Besides, since when are you going to make a feature-length film? Come on.
This plucky pipsqueak of a PC is lightweight and proud of it. It starts up fast, like a hummingbird, because it doesn’t have to struggle with all those ponderous programs you run on your big, lumbering, super-un-portable desktop system. For most of us, a computer’s not much more than an e-mailing and e-shopping terminal anyway. (In this case, make that Eee-mailing and Eee-shopping.) This nimble little netbook handles all that—and Skype and IM and such—with alacrity and a terrible, ruthless efficiency.
In the campaign to cleanse the term “lightweight” of negative connotations, this teeny-weenie computer makes a powerful case. Is it perfect? Well, obviously not. It could use a built-in webcam. Some users might prefer to have Windows XP installed. An 8-gig solid state hard drive would improve it, too.
But believe you us, weighing it down sure would not.
