They should call them NEATbooks, am I right, people?
Not so long ago, when they said the country would be dotted with numerous wireless “hotspots” where people could get online for free, I scoffed. This was me: “Scoff!” Oh, I was one smug customer.
Then it came to pass. There are wireless networks all over the freaking place now! I ate crow. With egg on my face. It was a kind of Humiliation Brunch.
So now I feel like a pretty much total jackass with my laptop that weighs like 25 pounds. I mean, it does a lot of processor-intensive stuff—I edit movies on it, and do print layouts, and manage my household finances—but I don’t want to do any of that stuff on road trips. I just want to update Facebook and check my email.
My friends, they both have these hot little Netbooks. They’ve got six-cell batteries in them instead of the Netbook standard three-cellers for up to six and a half hours of use, depending on what you’re doing. And they weigh a smidge less than three pounds! I’ve got shirts heavier than that. When we travel, I’m always like “hey, can I borrow your Netbook?” And they let me, but then they get all annoyed that I log them out of gmail and Twitter and Flickr and Facebook and Woot and whatever.
Man, I wish I had my own Acer Netbook.
Of course, they aren’t perfect. They’ve got XP installed, and don’t qualify for the free Windows 7 upgrade. Maybe I’d buy that myself. But I’m a little self-conscious even getting one, since it’s the same machine my friends both have. Is that just being a total biter? What am I supposed to do?
If only I could find the same thing in, like… some different colors.
