Come on come on come on come on iTouch me, babe
Like pretty much everyone, I was super impressed with the iPhone right away. I loved the cool Multi-Touch touchscreen interface, the widescreen display, and the way you can get the whole Internet on it, not just some crummy mobile-phone pidgin Internet.
But then I started using it, and a major design flaw became apparent almost immediately: It receives calls.
And this didn’t just happen once or twice. Calls came in over and over again, right when I was in the middle of emailing, or looking for old girlfriends on FaceBook, or buying iPod accessories at my favorite online retailers. Usually it was work. Sometimes it was my parents. Occasionally it was my stupid friends. But always it was a totally unwelcome interruption.
That’s why I was so stoked to hear about the iPod Touch. It plays music, sure, and it lets me browse my music library by flipping through the album artwork, which is pretty cute. Plus it gives me Wi-Fi web browsing for whatever I want to do online—even on-the-go impulse-buying new music from the iTunes store. I can zoom in and out on web pages just by making crazy pinchy gestures on the screen, and there are loads of amusing games, too.
It has built-in wireless support for Nike + iPod, too, in case a person ever wants to stick one of those sensors in his shoe and start running. I don’t know why a person would do that, but it’s his business.
Plus there’s a built-in speaker so I can play hilarious online videos for my friends without headphones.
But best of all (and unlike the iPhone), it is absolutely impossible for anyone to make a telephone call to this device. That means there’s no possibility of someone ringing me up in the middle of a YouTube exhibition and stopping the show right when the kitten is about to vomit, scuttling the perfect comic timing of the thing.
Take it from me: Since I upgraded from the iPhone to the iPod Touch, my life is infinitely simpler and more relaxed. It’s insane to think I used to have to deal with thirty calls a day from work. Now it’s down to a much more manageable zero, and I’m way happier.
Now if you’ll excuse me, an email just came in on my Touch with the subject line “You’re FIRED.” I should go see what that’s all about.
