Eugene: What are you doing?

Mike: Oh, just shooting a little footage with my Canon HV10 High-Definition MiniDV Camcorder. It’s the world’s smallest HD camcorder, capable of capturing images in 1080p resolution and 16:9 format. It records to these MiniDVD cassettes I have piled up next to me.

Eugene: Yeah, great, but why are you pointing it at the TV? And what the hell are you watching, anyway?

Mike: It’s the 1975 movie Doc Savage: The Man of Bronze, a cult classic previously available only on low-quality bootleg VHS tapes. I’ve got a ton of movies like this: the Star Wars Christmas special, the failed JLA pilot CBS made in the ‘90’s, Roger Corman’s Fantastic Four movie – way better than the ones with Jessica Alba, by the way – and that time Iggy Pop cut himself during a guest appearance on Sesame Street. They all look like crap because they’re all bootlegs. But once I re-shoot them all with my Canon HD camcorder, they’ll look great. All, like, hi-res and stuff.

Eugene: You’re kidding me, right? That, that won’t work. It doesn’t work like that.

Mike: What do you mean? Why not?

Eugene: Because the image of the movie will still be low-res.

Mike: No, look, it says “HD camcorder”, so anything I shoot with it will be in HD.

Eugene: No, no…that’s like shooting a TV playing Citizen Kane with a color camcorder and expecting it to be in color. The HV10’s a great camcorder, but it can’t add anything that’s not in the original.

Mike: So wait. You’re saying that even if I shoot video of these movies with an HD camcorder, I will not get an HD-quality version of the movie? Like, when I put my re-shot movies onto DVD, they won’t look any better than the video tapes?

Eugene: No. They’ll probably look worse, because you’re shooting video of a TV screen, for God’s sake.

Mike: Aw, man…

2.98MP True HD CMOS Sensor (1920×1080) Canon improves upon the standard CCD camcorders by using a CMOS sensor to generate images. The 2.9MP CMOS Sensor tends to process faster than a CCD for richer color and sharper detail.
Thanks to DIGIC DV II image processing, the HV10 produces video with improved color reproduction ideal for skin tones, and dark and light scenes. It also uses a noise reduction system that uses two types of noise reduction, for HD images that are crystal clear.
The Instant AF feature uses an external sensor, together with Canon’s auto-focus system, to help significantly decrease the time it takes to find the focus, even in low light conditions. This system achieves focus instantaneously, eliminating the struggle needed to find the correct focus.
While a digital image stabilizer compensates for shaking by adjusting the picture frame by frame, an Optical Image Stabilizer (OIS) avoids the shaking before the image is captured. OIS uses a a floating lens element that is moved relative to the rest of the lens, to maintain a balanced picture
